+ National Diabetes Week | The Doctor's Note
July brings us cold weather and tax returns, but also National Diabetes Week. Spearheaded by Diabetes Australia, this annual event recognises the many facets of diabetes, and raises awareness to improve prevention, detection and treatment.
Each year we focus on a different theme, and for 2019 it is 'It's About Time'. This theme emphasises the need to take the time to memorise and recognise the signs and symptoms of diabetes. Early detection reduces the risk of unnecessary complications, but many people are living with undiagnosed diabetes.
Do you know the signs of diabetes? You just need to remember the 4 T's:
- Toilet: Are you urinating more often?
- Tired: Are you feeling more tired than usual, yet there is no obvious reason why?
- Thirsty: Do you find you are drinking more than usual, or constantly feel thirsty?
- Thinner: Have you begun to lose weight quickly and unexpectedly (ie: not through diet or exercise change)?
Recognising any of the above symptoms in yourself or others as a possible indication of diabetes gives doctors a chance to get ahead of the condition and any associated complications. Nearly 300 people are diagnosed with diabetes every day in Australia, but it is often a silent condition that can easily go undetected. However if you remain vigilant, and keep an eye out for any changes in you or your loved ones, you can help us spread the word and lessen the impact of
diabetes.
+ Type 2 & newly diagnosed? | Event
Throughout National Diabetes Week, we aim to host educational events that will benefit our patients, new and old. This year, we will be holding a Type 2 Diabetes Education Session. This talk is aimed at those newly diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, or those who just need a
refresher of information. Our Credentialled Diabetes Educator Annette will take you through the ins and outs of diabetes, from glucose levels, to exercise, to medications. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions and meet others in the same boat as you.
This event will be held on Tuesday 16th July at 6.30pm, at our centre in Merewether. Light refreshments will be provided, and the heating will be on to keep you comfortable. We know managing diabetes is a team approach, so we welcome you to bring along your family, friends or carers as well.
This event is FREE and an excellent opportunity to receive the latest diabetes advice from a qualified medical professional. To book your spot, just click the button below, or give us a call on (02) 4963 2323. We can’t wait to see you and help you with your diabetes!
+ Type 2 with heart risks? | Clinical Trials
Our clinical trial team is dedicated to researching new treatment options for diabetes, and have started recruiting for a new study focusing on Type 2 Diabetes.
The SURPASS study is testing an investigational medication for its effectiveness in treating Type 2 Diabetes in comparison with insulin. This study is focusing on people with an increased risk of cardiovascular events in particular.
In order to complete this study, we need volunteers from the public. You may be eligible for this study if you have:
- Type 2 Diabetes
- an HbA1c between 7.5-10.5%
- an increased cardiovascular risk (eg: heart disease)
- taking oral anti-hyperglycaemic medication (eg: metformin)
You will be medically supervised and there will be no costs involved. You will also be reimbursed for any travel costs incurred during your visits to our centre.
If this sounds like a study you'd be interested in helping out with, or one you'd like to know more about, send an email to [email protected]. To see what other clinical trials we are currently recruiting for, please click the link below.

Please note: We will be moving from a monthly newsletter to a quarterly newsletter. We will still contact you if there are any upcoming events or trials that are held sooner than the next newsletter would be published. We thank you for your continued support and hope you continue to find these newsletters both interesting and
informative.
