Last year's extraordinary heifer streak has ended. Estelle calved on February 1st with a bull calf (seven days overdue), Poppy calved on February 14th with a bull calf (four days overdue), and now I'm waiting for Louise to calve. She was due on February 19th but still hasn't calved, so I'm expecting another bull calf as overdue calves are usually—but not always—bulls.
A classifier from Holstein Canada came out to the farm earlier this month and scored the cows.
Classifiers evaluate the mammary system, feet and legs, dairy strength, and rump on each cow and give her a final class and score. The cow is assigned a class based on how many points she received:
• Fair (F): 74 points or lower
• Good (G): 75-79 points
• Good Plus (GP): 80-84 points
• Very Good (VG): 85-89 points
• Excellent (EX) 90+ points
Estelle was still too fresh, so Gabriella was the only first lactation score, and she went GP 80. Marina was classified for the first time as a four-year-old and went VG 85. The classifier raised Gypsy Moon's score from GP 82 to VG 85, and Buttercup qualified for a second EX 90 for a final score of EX 90-2E.
I taught a sold-out Cheddar cheesemaking class on January 29th, with participants from four Canadian provinces and five US states. If you missed this one, I'm teaching another Cheddar class on November 5th.
I'm teaching a Mozzarella cheesemaking class on April 2nd. If you've always wanted to learn how to make Mozzarella, or maybe you've tried to make it without success, this class is for you! You'll receive a copy of my tried-and-true Mozzarella recipe (that works with raw milk from your cow or pasteurized milk from the grocery store), and I'll guide you through the entire cheesemaking
process step-by-step. In addition, I'll share all my tips and tricks learned from 15 years of cheesemaking and teach you how to tweak your recipe so you get that perfect stretch every time! Tickets are $59.95 per device; click here to register.
