Hi ,
I'm celebrating the arrival of my favourite season with 10% off the online Mozzarella class that I'm teaching on Saturday, October 2nd when you enter the coupon code AUTUMN at checkout.
If you've always wanted to learn how to make Mozzarella, or maybe you've tried to make it without success, this class is for you! You'll receive a copy of my tried-and-true Mozzarella recipe (that works with raw milk from your cow or pasteurized milk from the grocery store), and I'll guide you through the entire cheesemaking process step-by-step and share all my tips and tricks learned from 15 years of cheesemaking. Tickets are $59.95 per device; click here to register.
Earlier this month, my husband and I escaped from the farm for a couple of days to celebrate our 3rd anniversary. We went camping at Blanket Creek Provincial Park, south of Revelstoke on the Columbia River. We spent two nights there and wanted to spend a third, but we needed to get back to the farm to start our third crop and corn harvest.
Marina's third calf—another heifer—was born on September 14th. I've named her Princess Diya, after Diya Kumari, the granddaughter of the last ruling Maharaja of the princely state of Jaipur. Her name is pronounced DEE-uh, and it means light or glow.
A funny story for you... My phone fell out of the kangaroo pocket of my hoodie while I was feeding Diya a bottle of colostrum, and I didn't realize it until I went to take some pictures—and my phone was GONE.
I'd recently finished a family milk cow mentoring session, so my phone was still on silent. Thankfully, I've set Ben's contact on emergency bypass so that he can still reach me when my phone is on silent or do not disturb, so I asked him to call my phone. We could faintly hear the ringtone, and as we assumed, my phone was buried in the maternity pen bedding.
I usually set my volume around 25%, so it was pretty quiet; at one point, we even debated whether one of the cows could have pulled my phone out of my pocket and swallowed it. (Picture me, leaning against Marina's belly and listening while Ben dialled my phone. 😂) Twelve calls later, we finally pinpointed the precise location of the sound and started digging through the shavings until we found it—a little dusty but still in one piece.
So what is a family milk cow mentoring session? It's a 30 or 60-minute Zoom call where I answer one to three (or more, time permitting) of your milk cow questions.
Some of the topics that I've covered in mentoring sessions this past month include: preparing for calving, preventing and treating milk fever, the pros and cons of calf sharing, switching to once-a-day milking, treating mastitis, reviewing milking procedures, training your cow to stand still for milking without feeding grain, and what you need before bringing a milk cow home.
