In this newsletter, we explore "What Everyone Should Know About Blue Light and Its Effect on Vision."
People are increasingly spending more time on smartphones, tablets, computers and LED screens. Studies are showing that the blue light emitted from these sources can damage the
macular region of the retina, where we get the sharpest vision.
What is blue light? Blue light is at the lower end of the light spectrum, meaning it has shorter wavelengths and more energy than most of the visible spectrum. It includes a variation of ranges from blue-violet light to blue-turquois light. Blue-violet light causes the most damage and can be found in energy efficient sources like
LEDs, flat screen TVs, and smartphones.
Did you know that dietary supplementation with Zeaxanthin and Lutein can provide an effective natural method of increasing the eye's defense against blue light? According to an article by Dr. Graham Erickson, OD FAAO, FCOVD, these nutrients can also help with increased contrast sensitivity, reduced glare, and improved recovery from bright light. Learn

Did you know that some blue light has positive effects? The blue light discussed most these days, blue-violet light, can
have some harmful effects on the body. According to a recent study, blue-turquois light is essential for circadian rhythm, the function of the pupillary reflex and overall health. Specifically, it can be used to treat mood disorders and is used in sleep therapy.
Did you know that eyewear is available to help with eyestrain and exposure to blue light? Just ask Dr.Collier or Dr. Strawn for more information about this eyewear.
From May 1 through May 7, we will support Screen Free Week - an
international celebration where children, families, schools and communities are urged to spend 7 days where they turn OFF "digital entertainment" and take that time to talk, play, daydream, explore nature and spend time with family and friends.
Hope this information was useful.
