Several months ago, we shared information about the launch of our Lean Journey. Being a Lean organization involves the adoption of specific principles, tools and processes. One of the first that we’ve embraced is the use of A3 reporting as a decision-making tool.
A3 reporting is a Lean tool that helps improve collaboration, problem solving and outcomes. The name is derived from the actual size of the document – an A3 is the ISO Standard designation for an 11” x 17” sheet of paper. A3 reports provide a historical record of an issue or problem to be solved along with the rationale behind
various decisions or solutions and documentation about how the team arrived at them.
When A3s are used effectively, they can:
- Provide concise project updates for senior leadership and drive faster input and feedback
- Create a dashboard full of useful information to reference
- Share information and knowledge among team members
- Promote deliberate and thoughtful decision-making
- Facilitate the arrival of consensus among team members
Our use of A3s has supported everything from managing internal strategic goals and initiatives to helping potential clients evaluate the feasibility of their future projects. Like many Lean principles, A3 reporting is an extremely simple, but powerful tool for organizations.
