Hello ...
My apologies for a late newsletter this month - I just returned from some travels that included a few wonderful clear nights under
the inky-dark southern-hemisphere Milky Way in the Hurtado Valley of Chile. Thanks to the team at Hacienda Los Andes for a wonderful experience. So without further delay... here's your Cosmic Pursuits newsletter for April 2023!
1. Venus and Mercury put on a fine planetary show in April after sunset, while the first good meteor shower in
many months arrives on the 22nd. A lucky few southern hemisphere observers get to see a rare hybrid solar eclipse (and lots more see a partial eclipse). Here's what to see in the Night Sky This Month...
2. From the Cosmic Pursuits archives - Joe Bergeron's
wonderful ode to small telescopes.
3. Bob King's latest great article - a treatise on seeing and understanding the aurora
borealis.
4. Why astronomers are scratching their heads about the first round of results from the James Webb Space telescope.
5. Five telescopes that don't exist, but should.
And the astronomy quotation of the month:
"Of all the stars I admired, drenched
in various rivers and mists,
I chose only the one I love,
Since then I sleep with the night."
- Pablo Neruda
