The study of facial lines and features is an integral part of terrainism, a holistic approach to health that
looks at the internal and external terrain of an individual. In terrainism, the evaluation of facial lines and features is especially important as it relates to Aryvedic medicine. By understanding the meaning behind the lines and features of the face, we can gain insight into the health of a person and identify areas of imbalance. This practice is not new; in fact, it has been used for many ages.
The forehead is the first area to consider when evaluating the face. Horizontal lines indicate stress and anxiety, vertical lines indicate fear and anger (an angry liver), and wrinkles indicate a lack of joy and contentment (a lack of antioxidants). All of these can put strain on the nervous system, digestive system, and respiratory system.
The eyes are another key area of the face. Dark circles indicate poor digestion and absorption, which can put
strain on the digestive system. Drooping eyelids indicate a lack of energy, which can put strain on the immune system.
The cheeks are also an important area to examine. Dimples indicate poor circulation, which can put strain on the
circulatory system. Sunken cheeks indicate poor nutrition, which can put strain on the endocrine system.
Finally, thin lips indicate dehydration, which can put strain on the renal system, and drooping corners indicate
depression and worry, which can put strain on the nervous system.
The evaluation of facial lines and features is an important part of terrainism and Aryvedic medicine, as it
provides insight into the health of a person. By looking at the entire body as a whole, trainers can identify areas of imbalance and suggest treatments that can help restore balance and promote holistic health. I will include a brief description chart below. However, keep in mind that the purpose of this handout is not to diagnose a condition but rather to help you understand the cues your face and body may be giving you.
Let’s dive a little deeper, shall we?
The rate and postural engagement or coordination of how breath is observed are proportional to the flow rate of
the cerebral spinal fluid (CFS), which has a specific frequency of flow being pumped by the ventricles of the brain. Breathing through the nose vibrates the nasal tissues, which have a close relationship with the hypothalamus, which influences every known chemical system in the body. This is precisely one major reason why postural changes cause different changes in hormones.
Some of you may have heard of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, or HPA.
The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is a critical endocrine system involved in the regulation of the body's stress response. HPA activation influences the production of hormones such as cortisol, which can affect the body's response to stress. This complex system is responsible for coordinating many body processes, such as appetite, sleep, mood, and energy levels, as well as influencing the immune system. Imbalances in the HPA axis can result in a variety of
physical and psychological symptoms, including fatigue, insomnia, depression, and anxiety. It is an important system that the hypothalamus is the driving force of.
