Dr. William Dodson is a frequent contributor to ADDitude magazine. I almost always learn something from his articles and find myself returning to them over time. Today I'd like to share a link to his article called "Three Defining Features of ADHD That Everyone Overlooks."

The three features Dr. Dodson highlights are:

ADHD as an interest-based nervous system
ADHD emotional hyperarousal
ADHD rejection sensitivity

The general public has been educated to think of ADHD primarily in terms of another three characteristics: impulsivity, hyperactivity, and inattention. For some of us, the three features Dr. Dodson discusses are even more prominent. I highly recommend his article.

In my last email, I shared two graphics based on my takeaways from the 2019 International Conference on ADHD. Below are two more. You'll see that the first one has to do with the emotional regulation issue Dr. Dodson addresses in his article.

Here's another takeaway. It addresses the difficulty many of us experience with short term memory. Can you relate to this situation?

THANKSGIVING

Commercial establishments in our area of Virginia have been letting us know for quite a few weeks (even months!) that the holidays are coming. With Thanksgiving in the US now just a little over a week away, it finally seems appropriate to think about our holidays, what they mean, and why we celebrate them.

Thanksgiving reminds me of the important place gratitude plays in our lives. We know that what we pay attention to grows, so paying attention to the good in our lives and world and being grateful can be a powerful act. Many people have what they call a "gratitude practice." If you have a special gratitude practice that you'd like me to share with others, I'd love to hear from you!
