Hello , how are you this week? Me, I'm just happy to see Spring coming on, and thinking about getting some planting done.
Continuing this year's theme of how a coach might work with you, I have the great pleasure of telling you about Harrison Assessments, plus another book recommendation and a nice bit of research.
Tip: this update is best viewed in landscape if you are on your mobile.
This is the grandaddy of all psychometric assessments, the most powerful one I know of. It was created by Dr Dan Harrison, who among many other accomplishments, is both a mathematician and
a psychologist.
HA is based on two theories; Enjoyment Theory and Paradox Theory. Enjoyment Theory simply states that what we enjoy doing, we do more, we tend to get better at it, we then enjoy it more, and so on in an upwards 'virtuous' circle. The reverse also holds - what we don't enjoy we tend not to do and so do not get the practice to improve it. So applying
this to the workplace, the best way to increase employee engagement - and retention - is to get people in roles that they enjoy.
Paradox Theory says that true strengths are made up of apparent opposites, and to have a true strength they need to be in balance. HA identifies twelve Paradoxical Strengths, for example, Respectful Candour (don't you love the bosses who have this?!). This is made up of Frankness and Diplomacy; you can see that if you are not sufficiently Frank
then you risk not getting your message across, and if you are not sufficiently Diplomatic then you risk alienating your people and therefore still won't get your message across.
The assessment consists of a short 'smart' questionnaire which indicates your traits, such as Optimistic, Authoritative, Influencing, and about 170 others. On this is based dozens of possible reports across the whole HR area, from recruitment to succession planning and more.
It can be especially useful for career planning, where a series of reports will help reveal your ideal career and ways forward, based on your strengths, preferences and interests. It can be used by individuals and large staff teams, and coaching based on these reports is very focussed and efficient.
I'm licensed to use these assessments via Synergy Global - ask me more if this appeals to you or your team.
I think this one is scary...
In these days of 'post-truth', 'alternative facts' and general information overload, it is even more important, and difficult to work out, what to believe from everything that's thrown at us.
The BPS reports a study where some light is shone on how people come to believe false information.
It's quite involved, and you can see the whole article here if you like, but it seems that the repetition of statements (Truth By Repetition) makes us more likely to believe that they are true, even to some extent, implausible statements.
How careful we must be, if we care about truth and accuracy.
It's about how we don't find happiness by seeking it, and that it doesn't help to be constantly trying to squash 'negative' thoughts - 'all this trying to make everything right is a big part of what's wrong...'. Full of nice juicy paradoxes, it's very entertaining as well as salutary.
Why not have a look and let me know what you think of it?

- Climate change is more and more urgent - recently we've seen record breaking temperatures in the Antarctic, for example. So I'm still doing my best to spread the word about this. Do please consider joining my free updated list, as well as checking out my climate coaching packages in my Shop.
- I'm still working on Three Principles Training and I'll keep you posted on progress. It's partly about how our experience is created not from our circumstances, as might seem obvious, but
rather by our thoughts, from the inside out. Another idea to share is that the brain is nothing like a camera - we do not see so much 'what's out there' (whatever that is) as what we expect to see!
- If you're thinking of working personally with me, I always recommend that we first have a free intro call (updated link) to make sure coaching is right for you before we start. If I
don't think it is, I'll say so and try to signpost you to what else would be helpful.
- I now have a career coaching package ready, which you can see here.
- You can see all my coaching packages and e-books on this link here to my shop, and check my
availability on the (updated) button below. And if you can't see a suitable time, contact me anyway and I'll do my best to find one for you.
- I'm still mainly doing remote working, due to family situations but it may be possible to resume some face to face sessions eventually.
Here's a summary of everything that I'm involved in, on the button below. Also the three free quizzes, that help you to pinpoint where you can best make changes in your situation. You can repeat them whenever you like to see your progress over time.
Thanks for your time, - I wish you a restorative weekend, keep safe, and I'll be in touch again in a couple of weeks,
All best wishes,
Barbara
