Hello , hope you are keeping all right?
The next coaching approach that I am introducing to you is a real biggie, so I'm going to look at it over the next two issues rather than just one.
This is Climate Coaching - read on!
What is climate coaching?
|
There are a couple of answers to this. First the simpler and more obvious one; it's about how we can work out together what is yours to do in the climate
emergency.
We are now seeing incontrovertible evidence that the actions of humans, especially in the 'developed', fossil fuel driven societies of the North and West, is contributing to a rise in global temperatures that may well be incompatible with human life as we know it today. I don't know how many times I've heard the phrase, 'if we
don't act now' and it's getting scary, as the governments of the world are not acting anything like fast enough to stop the use of fossil fuels. There are other drivers of climate change too, but this is the main one.
Over the last five years or so, coaches as a profession have been thinking what we should do. We have always been very careful to work with the client's agenda and deliberately keep out our own views. We are there to help you think, not to tell you what to think; this is a fundamental part of coaching ethics. But now the
profession is wondering, it is ethical NOT to take every opportunity to bring the climate crisis into the awareness of our clients? The stakes are so high now that most coaches feel exactly that.
But we also know that you don't create change just by giving out facts. So we start gently. We ask, what do you care about? what's a concern for you? This gives space for the big issue of climate to be brought out in a way that feels right for you. One way to do this is to use Neil's Wheel (I briefly mentioned this a few months back, see the link) which you can see attached for download.
It's a bit like my Personal Life Analysis, where you score different areas of your life, but used slightly differently in that you look at the areas you are drawn to - or not! - as a basis for discussion. You can book a short call with me to try it out if you like, and I encourage you also to join my Climate list, as I note in every issue - which goes into more detail.
Next time I'll introduce a couple of other ways of looking at climate issues.
How many senses do we have?
|
Well, we can start with the 'five' senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell, but this research report introduces quite a few more that you might not have come across - and they're all important, even if we didn't know we had them!
How about Proprioception? If I can even say it; it's rather a tongue twister! This is the sense of where our limbs are in space, without looking, and if you haven't got it, it can be incredibly disabling. For example, how can you get on a bus if you don't know where your feet are? Or drive a car? Happily this sense can usually be trained and improved, as you can see in
the article.
Then there is Interoception, sensing what's going on inside the body, especially the beat of your heart without feeling for a pulse. Good interoception seems to be linked to greater emotional awareness too, and for me it's another indication of how intimately the body and mind are intertwined. And it can probably be improved too!
It's all about the microbes that live in our intestines - sorry if you are reading this over dinner! - and they've recently been shown to be really important for health, even looked at by some authorities as an additional body organ, as we have a pound or two of them each!
Not only do they do important work for the body, for example helping our digestion and in the production of some vitamins such as B and K, but they also have a role in the production of certain neurotransmitters such as serotonin.
We can help them along by eating foods they like, especially fermented foods. So I'm just off for my dose of tempeh and sauerkraut...
I'll be relieved if you enjoy it, and very pleased if you put some of it into practice!
