Hello again , hope you've been okay since last I was in touch?
Today I'll say about more about the Three Principles understanding - even then I will have only begun to scratch the surface!
Tip: this update is best viewed in landscape if you are on your mobile - and don't miss the images! :-)
You'll recall from last time that the Three Principles of Mind, Consciousness and Thought deal with the whole of our human experience; how it's created and what difference it makes to us to know this and to put it into practice in daily life.
One of the mainstays is to realise that our experience does not come from our circumstances. Sounds very counter-intuitive, I know - but as Michael Neill shows in his lovely book 'The Inside Out Revolution', our brains create our experience from the sense impressions we receive, that is, our experience is created from the inside out - from what our brains make of its input. We live, as 3P people say, in the feeling of our thinking, all
the time. And often, it's not helpful to believe that thinking!
So what's going on when we feel bad? This approach suggests that a bad feeling is a nudge that our thinking isn't at the optimum level, and we need to let things settle. We don't need to get
caught up in trying to feel better - like a snow globe, things can settle on their own, if we leave them alone and just let them do their thing.
Syd Banks, who started 3P, said that if we learned not to be afraid of our experience, but just to accept it as it comes, that in itself would change the world.
There's much, much more to 3P - how do you fancy the different levels of consciousness, for starters? - but for now I hope I have whetted your appetite!
You'd better have that coffee!
|
Our research nugget this week suggests that if you want a coffee, well, you're better to have it rather than resist the craving and skip it till later. This article from the BPS describes a study where people who experience coffee cravings were asked to skip the coffee and then to do a memory activity.
Their responses were compared with others who had not been denied their longed-for coffee, and the first group performed significantly less well.
So if you've got an important meeting coming up or maybe a lecture, it will probably pay you not to skip your coffee. I must say that's music to my ears, as I do love my one posh morning coffee and it's nice to know it's probably doing me good!
Love and Positive Psychology
|
I've noticed how the word 'love' is starting to creep into management speak in recent years, along with this idea of being your whole self at work. Seems a lot more positive to
me. And Barb Frederikson, one of the giants of Positive Psychology, has written a beautiful book about how we can get better at Love, in its widest sense, and how important it is for our mental and physical health. She describes how we can foster 'micro-moments' of connection, even with strangers. Don't we all know how an unexpected small kindness can transform our day, and how good it feels? Hope you enjoy it!
