Hello again , I hope you are keeping well as we go into 2023. I wanted to be in touch with you at least once a month, and so here I am. I realise it's a bit late to say Happy New Year, but I will just
presume to say that my New Year package can still be purchased for the next couple of weeks or so. I am giving my subscribers a 10% discount for this - you enter this
code at checkout - TCBTEN23. Here's the package link again. I said I
would give some tips this year on Neuro Coaching - how can recent discoveries in brain science help us to lead a better life, so here goes with a little bit about Attention... Pay Attention!! When I was a child, my mother often said this to me, when I had my nose in a book and there were other things she thought I should be doing - and I wasn't listening! It's a curious phrase; why is Attention something we 'pay'? Well, there is more wisdom in this phrase than you might think, in
that Attention is a limited mental resource and we can run out of it, just as we can with Willpower. So, like financial resources, maybe it's something we shouldn't waste. One way that we easily use it up is if we engage in multi-tasking. We think we are being efficient, doing several things at once, but what's really happening is that we are switching attention very
quickly between our various important tasks, not concentrating on any of them, and running down our attention quicker that we need to. So I guess the Thought for the Day, is Do one thing at once! Another point about Attention is that the brain uses two main types of it. The brain is divided into two halves, left
hemisphere and right hemisphere, and whilst there is no hard and fast distribution of what's done in each side, there is a definite tendency to employ different kinds of attention. Imagine, for example, that you are a little bird pecking away at seed on the ground for your birdy lunch. You need focussed attention (left side) so that you don't eat pebbles instead of seeds, but at the same time you do not want to be something else's dinner. And so you also need to keep a look out for predators,
who might come at you from any angle. Hence the right side has a wider, more diffuse, more encompassing attention. Both are needed, but in our modern 24/7 culture
we tend to overvalue the focussed, left side attention to the detriment of the other. What's happening for you? Do you multi-task? Could you pay more attention to your own attention habits? Well, I think that's it for now , stay well, keep warm and I'll be in touch next month again. Do get in touch if I can help you with anything, or you'd like me to cover any particular topic. Very best wishes, Barbara P.S. if you like this update and
