Hi
Happy Friday!
I hope you enjoyed the holiday weekend and the short work week. I didn’t get to much this week as I was knee deep in writing a teleplay outline for the series version of NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN for Rob Reiner. It’s coming along nicely.
I’ve just got a couple of things to recommend to you this week:
WATCHING
HACKS
HBOMAX
HACKS stars Jean Smart as comedy legend, Deborah Vance, who has spent the last several years in a residency at a Las Vegas casino when her manager sticks her with Ava Daniels, a down on her luck, millennial comedy writer played by Hannah Einbinder (daughter of Laraine Newman, one of the original cast members on SNL). The second season just dropped and it’s great. The dynamics between two women in show business from two different
generations is real and funny. VERY funny. I think Jean Smart can do anything. She’s wonderful in this. I’d be shocked if both of these actresses and the show itself aren’t nominated for Emmys this season.
WATCH
READING
EVIDENCE OF LOVE
By John Bloom & Jim Atkinson
Last week I recommended the miniseries CANDY on Hulu about the 1980 ax murder of Betty Gore by her friend (and her husband’s lover) Candy Montgomery. The show got me obsessed about this case. This week I read the definitive book on it. EVIDENCE OF LOVE is apparently the source material for the TV show and, it includes all of the juicy tidbits the miniseries left out. It’s one hell of a read. It was written a few years after the murder
and the authors apparently had access to many of the case’s key players.
Amazon has it, as does Audible. Check it out! HBOMAX is working on its own interpretation of the murder with Elizabeth Olsen playing Candy. It’ll be out some time in the fall.
