Copie's Choice for the weekend of June 19

Happy Weekend!

It's been a minute since I sent out a Copie's Choice email, primarily because I haven't had much to report being locked down like this.

I'm in quarantine with my son Casey and, in addition to having some really quality father/son time, we're also getting a lot of creative work done.

Casey is a rapper and musician and he's been working on a new album.

I'm writing my first fiction novel and I'm close to finished with a first draft. I'm also working on a new play with a full cast for the San Francisco Playhouse.

My latest solo show, GRANDMA & ME, was supposed to open at the Marsh on April 4. The shutdown has altered those plans and it will open just as soon as the state says it's OK to have audiences again.

Copeland's CornerI mentioned my weekly COPELAND'S CORNER podcast in a previous email. I interview interesting guests and the look at the news of the week with a panel of comedians. You can check us out here.

I've also started a short daily 3-5 minute podcast on depression called BEATING THE DEMON. In each short episode, I give a practical tip on some things I do when I depressed to make myself feel better. It's really needed through the times we're living through now. Several listeners are saying that the show helps the a lot. Check out BEATING THE DEMON here.

BOOKS

Bad BloodBeen getting some reading done. I just finished BAD BLOOD by John Carreyrou. It's the true story about Elizabeth Holmes and the Theranos hoax. Great book.

I also read a marvelous biography on the great Hattie McDaniel called HATTIE MCDANIEL: Black Ambition, White Hollywood by Jill Watts. It's an interesting and infuriating read. It follows in detail what the first African American Oscar winner had to go through both before and after winning her Academy Award for GONE WITH THE WIND.

I'm currently riveted by Bella Stumbo's book UNTIL THE TWELFTH OF NEVER about the Betty Broderick case.

In case you forgot, Broderick is the bitter divorcee who shot her ex-husband and his new bride to death as they slept in their bed back in 1989.

Until the 12th of NeverI can't put this book down. There's so much detail about what led up to the shootings.

She helped put her husband, Dan, through Cornell Medical School AND Harvard Law School. After 17 years of marriage and four kids (and nine pregnancies) he dumped Betty for a 22-year-old receptionist.

It's a great story... speaking of which...

I picked up the BRODERICK book because USA is running a miniseries based on the case starring Amanda Peet and Christian Slater.

It is Gooood! Check it out. It airs Tuesday nights.

Here's hoping that you and your family are safe and healthy and will stay that way.

Have a GREAT weekend!
