Copie's Choice for the weekend of June 26

Happy Weekend!

Although I must admit that it’s difficult to use that salutation because since the lockdown began, I have trouble remembering what day of the week it is.

Is it just me or are you having the same issue?

Before the latest television season ended, I could keep my calendar straight by the shows that were on. If SVU was on it was Thursday. BLUE BLOODS meant Friday. SURVIVOR was Wednesday.

Got a couple of summer TV benchmarks I just found.

TELEVISION

Dirty JohnLast week I told you about the new Betty Broderick miniseries Tuesday nights on USA. Several of you emailed that you couldn’t find it.

The full title is DIRTY JOHN: THE BETTY BRODERICK STORY.

Don’t know why they’re using Dirty John as this story has nothing to do with this one but, I’ve worked in television long enough to know not to look for logic at times.

Betty Broderick is the La Jolla woman whose husband left her for his much younger secretary...so she shot them both to death as they slept. They had recently married.

It reminds me of a married friend of mine who said in regard to her husband. “I will never need a divorce lawyer. I may need a defense lawyer...”

Check it out...it’s GOOD.

Sunday nights, HBO is presenting a new PERRY MASON series starring Matthew Rhys from THE AMERICANS. It’s pretty good. It’s like a superhero origin story that tells how Mason went from being a sleazy private eye to the lawyer who never lost a case. It’s set in the 40s and one episode in, they’ve got me.

READ

My brilliant daughter Carolyn published an essay in Wednesday’s Washington Post on what it was like growing up with grandparents who wouldn’t accept her because she and her brothers are half African American. It’s an eye-opening read, especially give the times we’re living through and the conversation America is finally having about race.

Please give it a read here.

LISTEN

I’ve been busy with a few projects. I have two different podcasts I’d like to invite you to check out.

Copeland's CornerCOPELAND’S CORNER is a weekly roundup of the week’s news with analysis by comedians and timely interviews with members of Congress and newsmakers guests. It comes out on Thursdays.

Listen to the latest episode here.

BEATING THE DEMON is a daily podcast for people who deal with depression and anxiety as well as those who love them. Monday thru Friday I give a 3-5 minute tip on things I do to make myself feel better during the times that I struggle. You can hear the latest here, as well as the previous 30 3-minute tidbits here.

After you listen, please pass the link on to someone who can use the help.

I’m hearing from folks who tell me that it’s really helping them.

BOOKS

John BoltonI’m finishing up the 700-page UNTIL THE TWELFTH OF NEVER on the Betty Broderick murder case. It’s a good read.

Next I’ll read John Bolton’s new book, THE ROOM WHERE IT HAPPENED.

I read this with reluctance because what’s written should have been testimony before the House Judiciary Committee during impeachment. Instead, he sold it to HarperCollins for two million dollars.

The content is important, so I’ll bite the bullet and read my copy.

Wear a mask when you are in public and here’s hoping that you and yours stay safe and healthy during this difficult time.
