It’s not all gloom and doom…

Diversify your career portfolio with options that will bring clarity, comfort, and financial security. We recently published an article on how to do so. 

The Wall Street Journal claims: “One of the surest signs that the job market has begun to falter is a marked increase in layoffs. There is no sign of that yet in the U.S.”

At the best of times, there is nothing more fear-inducing than wondering about your livelihood and the worry about the care and safety of your family. With the threat of a recession, feeling in control of your career is the ultimate goal, in my opinion. Our recent research has uncovered over a dozen industries on the rise, just in case you’re thinking of an industry change! We have also uncovered a handful of strategies you can deploy that reduce the anxiety of planning for “what if.”

See these interesting trends from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics:

A few instant pointers: 

• Avoid the herd mentality  
• Understand what is in your control 
• Don’t be invisible to your board or the market—work on your brand in good times AND bad 
• Build trust with your team and with your network 
• Never stop building relationships 
• Know market vulnerabilities 
• Use your industry network as a corporate asset 
• Create a plan A, B, and C for your career journey (we have the structure and context for this).

At the board level, there are ample opportunities to serve as a non-executive director, but there is lack of access to those opportunities because many of these opportunities are filled through personal networks. How do you fix that? Surround yourself with tools and people who will champion you.

Rising stars who are interested in serving at the C-level often present themselves as their technical function first (finance, legal, technology, etc.). Position yourself as a business leader (think like a CEO) first and leverage your functional expertise secondly.
