Learn how to qualify for a board opportunity and understand what raising visibility at this level involves.
If you honestly assess your career network at this moment, how many outside and inside your industry know you’re considering a board seat?
Who will speak for you?
What is your key message?
Qualifying for a board opportunity is only part of the journey. There are other areas you will need to consider as you plan your climb into the board levels.
1. Board of Director Education
2. Member of a board of director association
3. Expertise in a functional area (such as executive compensation or cybersecurity)
4. Visibility in the marketplace (if people don’t know you, they can’t recruit you)
5. Professional networks who can speak on your behalf
6. Confidence marketing yourself

As summer comes to a close, I am reminded of how beautiful this season can be in Canada. We have an incredible sailing community here in Nova Scotia with 13,300 km of stunning, accessible coastline. There is something majestic about being on the water and feeling a sense of detachment from the land
where we spend most of our time. Fortunately, the fall season in Canada is equal to summer in beauty and I look forward to its appearance.
