You’re an achiever. You’re driven by challenges and eager to get the job done. Your reputation (brand) states that in getting the job done, you always exceed expectation. Without exception.
And yet…
You find yourself slightly dissatisfied, restless and can’t truthfully admit to being unhappy, but your mind has begun fantasizing about the green grass on the other side. You wonder, is it time? Should I stay or should I go?
The decision is yours exclusively. But – unless you’re walking directly into a new role – I implore you: Don’t be hasty.
Hasty is not your style. Your style is strategic!
You’re driven by building something that will last. Take your time and weigh the pros against the cons. Among the pros and cons (you decide what goes on which side) is time.
It takes months to shake the hand of the chairman, CEO, owner or managing partner for your new position.
The formula I use is: the 4/10000 ratio…it takes 4 weeks of job search for every $10000 of required compensation (total compensation).
At times, by exploring within your company, you find new opportunities and don't have to restart in a new environment.
Time is on your side (luckily). Build a strategy that breathes life into your current position.
Meet Vijay.
Vijay was the CMO for Row-Row-Row Your Boat, Inc. and just celebrated 17 years. He enjoyed a great relationship with his boss, and in fact, their families vacationed together. He earned an excellent salary with good benefits. Private schools for the kids, big vacations.
The future was promising at Row-Row-Row Your Boat.
However — an intense travel schedule meant 75% of the time, he traveled to remote areas where he drove sometimes up to 2 hours each way from the airport.
He was feeling ill and exhausted. Vijay and I worked together on an exit strategy.
And then, Vijay was approached by a recruiter. For 6 months we vetted an opportunity near his home with little travel required. Vijay met his potential new peers and had dinner with the team and the CEO. It was falling into place.
But, there was an issue.
He noticed the CEO was not giving him good signals—texting during meetings and during the team dinner. He asked the CEO for a meeting (before signing the contract) and the CEO sent in the CHRO instead.
He turned down the offer.
He then redesigned his current role and eliminated 50% of his travel schedule. He is happier, healthier, and has started a mentorship program for young executives inside Row-Row-Row Your Boat Inc.
