Some companies never advertise for C-level roles. One reason is confidentiality—public exposure isn’t wise, especially if there’s a patent-pending or recipe to protect.
Recruiters silently watch for talent for their private equity clients (for example). The operating partner asks their recruiter to keep an eye open for the CEO role they have the perfect (but hidden) opportunity to fill for one of their portfolio companies.
Forming relationships with recruiters is a smart idea because many firms don’t have the skill to recruit, select, and vet C-level candidates. They leave it up to the expertise of recruiters.
This is why recruiters are critical.
But, you need to know which recruiter can help you. This means you must cooperate with recruiters when they call you, because there will come a day you’ll need their services.
The recruiter world is small and establishing relationships with only a few recruiters may feel like a weak strategy; however, most recruiters are very well connected.
So, for instance, if you’re seeking a CEO role in the hedge funds industry, a recruiter in the private equity world may not be able to help, but they may well know a hedge fund recruiter.
Never turn down an opportunity to chat with a recruiter.
Meet Cory Cratchit.
Cory was the first CFO for Ebenezer Enterprises, a hedge fund founded in the mid-1990s. Not long after his debut, the board appointed him as the CEO when the incumbent left.
Cory’s unique abilities are his data analysis, people skills, and exemplary client relations skills (a unicorn!). And he produces profitable results for investors!
His ability to unite the back, middle, and front office staff coined him the name “The Candyman” after the 1972 song. Cory is also charming. The staff loved him. And so did the board.
Weathering the storms of the 90s, and 2000’s (especially 2008/09), Cory saw opportunity where others saw risk.
Cory’s belief he would retire from E. Enterprises vanished when the board changed direction after onboarding a new board member. It is time to leave.
Over the years, Cory was approached by many recruiters, but didn’t see the value in engaging. After all, he wasn’t planning to leave.
Cory now needs to find recruiters to open doors. Going direct to hedge fund companies isn’t an option—they use recruiters to fill roles.
With our CV distribution service, Cory opened several doors.
