Trying to envision our next step on the corporate ladder is daunting – especially when change isn’t what we wanted (ahem).
Being made redundant, laid off, or bullied out the door makes climbing the corporate ladder feel more like walking the plank.
There is another option.
BUT, before anything else comes clear, you must believe that 95% of job seekers are competing for 5% of available jobs. This means there are 250 applicants for every 1 open position!
Another leap of faith I ask you take: the job I’m going to describe to you is all but invisible and yet the perfect elements are right here, taking shape:
you,
your unique skills,
a reliable internet accessibility,
a decent phone connection and,
a place to hang your hat
No doubt you’ve caught on I’m describing what can be mundanely known as self-employment.
Yet with your past achievements, you can find yourself quite happy doing consultancy work.
For some, the “better yet” scenario is your expertise could lend itself quite nicely to an advisory capacity at a Board of Directors level.
In this world, a very real and lucrative world, you retire into your own company. Define your own way of doing things. Finally.
Meet Maureen — Founder & CEO of Westgate. I was the very first client in my own business.
Maureen enjoyed a career working with wonderful bosses, amazing colleagues and great companies with stellar reputations. Her father always marveled at her ability to land excellent positions with wonderful people.
With corporate experience in human resources, administration, operations, and professional development, she was described by one high-ranking member of the Canadian judiciary as having a project execution style “better than a NASA launch” (she still has the letter from the
judge).
As with many career-focused individuals, Maureen envisioned her last position in her career as an entrepreneur, launching a business that capitalized on her experiences and
skills.
The decision came 10 years earlier than expected, when the work environment became unbearable. Maureen wasn’t the only person experiencing the pain and angst of working in a volatile
workplace.
So, she left. Just like that.
After 12 months of searching for a suitable role without success, she decided to start the business she had dreamed of—10 years earlier.
This year she is celebrating 9 years in business!
She created an invisible job that is perfect for her.

We are so excited to celebrate our 9th year in business (officially on December 11). It's been a challenging, yet rewarding near decade and I'm happy to report that I have no regrets in making the transition 9 years ago. To our friends, family, colleagues, and clients — this journey wouldn't have seen the success it has without you. We look forward to our 10th year and all that it will
bring!
