From a Canadian First Nation’s school room to a national board room, an interview with CEO Janice Ciavaglia

“Let your path guide you, because it's going to bring you to really high, high places in life.”

Janice is the CEO of the Assembly of First Nations in Ottawa, Canada, the advocacy body for the more than 640 Indigenous communities across Canada. Her peers and employees describe Janice as an innovative and visionary guide.

However, she didn’t start there:

"I think having worked with you for over a year and you helping me through a lot of this new change that I've been seeing and been able to be part of in my new role as CEO, I kind of think back about my trajectory of my career and, you know, I'm a teacher, I went to teacher’s college, I taught. So, I think back to when I was younger and I never thought I would be a CEO ever in my life.

I think now about how there's so many opportunities for people. And it's kind of just about trusting your path, taking risks, and taking that leap of faith and I think that's what I've been able to do”

Janice has also been recently nominated for the prestigious Canada's Top 40 Under 40 Award—a dynamic awards program that identifies outstanding young achievers in Canadian business, visionaries, and innovators changing the way things are done.

In this episode, we not only discuss Janice’s transition into CEO, but we also talk about the significance of orange shirt day, the power behind Canada’s new Truth and Reconciliation day, and the different ways companies and individuals can support our First Nations, Metis, and Inuit communities.

This past week on September 30^th, 2021 was Canada’s first National Truth and Reconciliation Day. It’s a day for reflection, education, action, and wearing orange shirts. We wrote letters to our Members of Parliament regarding actions that still require attention and we reviewed the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (calls to action). We also made a monthly plan of action because this reality deserves much more than a day’s worth of attention.
