BUR systems are renowned for their durability, reliability, ease of maintenance and cost-effectiveness. However, one strength of BUR systems which is often overlooked is overall energy efficiency - across a range of climates.

Asphalt Built-Up Roofs have always offered exceptional resistance to conductive heat loss and very strong R-value when compared to other low-slope roof systems. This makes BUR ideal for cold to moderate climates. But did you know that Built Up systems can also easily be made “Cool” in order to take advantage of the newer trend in “cool roofs”?

Depending on your reflectivity requirements, several methods can be employed to make BUR systems “Cool Compliant”. Reflective marble chips or light colored gravel can be substituted for dark gravel in a flood-coat of asphalt. Reflective granules or a factory-applied coating can be used in place of a dark coating on a mineral surfaced cap sheet. Also, a cool coating can be applied directly onto your built-up roof to achieve the desired effect.

Whatever the climate, BUR systems are quite adaptable, providing contractors the ability to choose from varying levels of reflectivity for a specific building type and environment. This trait, when combined with the multitude of performance benefits, make BUR systems a logical choice for building owners and contractors in all areas.
