Hey ,
I recently woke up to the IRS warning that scammers are now using gift cards to scam unsuspecting taxpayers.
How? you could be asking. Well, here is how they do it.
- They call, text, email, or contact you via social media
- They pretend to be IRS agents and scare you to death with fake threats
- For example, they say you are linked to criminal activity
- Once you are
scared, you lose focus and give in to their demands
Once you start listening to them, they ask you to buy gift cards and send them the numbers and pin codes, supposedly to pay off your tax “debt” or “penalty.”
Once you pay them, they disappear. And when you sober up and start asking questions, you will realize you have been scammed.
So, to protect yourself.
- Always be vigilant with your personal information and contact details
- Hire a trusted tax pro or accountant to handle your personal details. In that case, hire me.
I am already taking tax preparation clients for the 2023 tax season. Contact me to get started with the onboarding process.
