Hey
The Education Department launched a beta test of its website for student loan forgiveness applications last week Friday, ahead of the full rollout of the relief program.
This means that student loan borrowers began applying for up to $20,000 in debt forgiveness. This follows President Biden’s announcement of the relief program weeks ago.
Will this be different when the official launch rolls out?
If you are like me, you are probably asking, what if this messes up my application, especially if discrepancies exist between the beta test and the official program?
Well, do not worry at all. The departments said that anyone who applies now will have their form processed when the program launches. Applications being submitted
now are meant to help smoothen the process.
What
else do you need to know about this?
During the beta test period, this portal will be available on an on-and-off basis. This will not be because of some faults at all. But the Education department’s technical team will be pausing the site at various points for assessments, refinements, and maintenance.
So, if you cannot access the form, just wait, and retry later.
What do you need to apply for student loan forgiveness?
Below are the requirements to think of before applying.
- Your Social Security numbers
- Attest that you earned less than the income caps set for relief
- Below are the income caps:
- Less than $125,000 in 2020 or 2021, or
- Less than $250,000 for married couples
