This is an important update regarding the upcoming tax filing deadline. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has reminded taxpayers about the approaching deadline for filing their 2022 tax returns.
Key Details
- Deadline: Taxpayers who requested an extension to file their 2022 tax return must file their Form 1040 on or before Monday, October 16, 2023.
- Extensions for Specific Cases:
- Disaster-Area Taxpayers: Individuals in specific disaster areas, including parts of California, Alabama, and Georgia, have until the same date to file various federal individual and business tax
returns.
- Other Extensions: Taxpayers affected by flooding in Illinois and Alaska have until October 31, 2023, and those affected in Vermont have until November 15, 2023, to file.
Additionally, individuals impacted by recent natural disasters, such as the Maui fires and hurricane Idalia in parts of Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia, have until February 24, 2024, to file various individual and business tax returns. The list of affected areas is regularly updated on the IRS website.
- Military Personnel: Members of the military and others serving in a combat zone typically have 180 days after leaving the combat zone to file returns and pay any taxes due.
