Hey ,
Do you know? Your responsibilities don't end when you hire a tax professional. The State of Indiana recently sent out an email with a very clear message, and it mirrors what I've been emphasizing:
You’re Responsible For Providing All Tax Information To A Tax Professional.
This may seem obvious, but it's a point that is often overlooked. Here's why this is so important:
- Accurate Returns: I can't file an accurate return if I don't have all your tax documents. Missing info can cause delays and errors.
- Missed Deductions/Credits: You could miss out on valuable deductions and credits if you don't provide all the necessary paperwork.
- Penalties: Ultimately, you're legally responsible for any errors or omissions on your tax return, even if prepared by a professional.
The State of Indiana put it well: "When choosing a tax professional, it’s important to find someone who is qualified and trustworthy. Keep in mind that you are legally responsible for the information on your return and any penalties as a result."
Please watch this video, Tax Season Blues + IRS Auditing Black People + Q&A, where I touched on many issues affecting you during the tax season, including how and why it is your responsibility to provide accurate tax
documents.

Bottom line: I'm here to help you, but tax prep is a team effort. Please take your responsibility for providing complete documentation seriously this tax season.
Let me know if you have any questions!
