Hey ,
The IRS just announced a really important heads-up in their "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams: fake charities.
Yup, some seriously low folks try to take advantage of people's generosity after disasters or tough events. And when you “give” to them, your donation cannot be deducted because of the fake charity.
It makes sense, right? People like you and me want to help, and scammers try to use that against us to get money and even sensitive personal info. Commissioner Danny Werfel, at the IRS, warns against ever feeling pressured to give a donation right away.
That's a classic scammer trick!
So, let's outsmart those bad guys! Here's what to do:
- Take a breath: Real charities will appreciate your donation anytime. Do some research first!
- Pay smart: Gift cards or wire transfers? Nope! Use your credit card or a check to a charity you know is legit.
- Check them out: Sound a bit too similar to a well-known charity?
Double-check! The IRS has a tool for that: IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search (TEOS) tool.
- Too much info? Your Social Security number is a big no-no to share. Keep your personal details locked up tight unless you're absolutely sure.
See something fishy? Report those shady groups to the IRS to help protect others.
Let's be smart, and kind, and make sure our donations really make a difference!
