Yesterday, I was freaking the heck out. I have three empty (or near empty) shelves in my freezer and I’m running low on a lot of other foods. One of my raw food suppliers is nearly a week later in deliver due to unforeseen emergencies and I don’t get my next co-op order until the 18th (next week!). So
what will I do? Because stocking up (even if for a short period) at the local pet store is NOT in my budget.
Feed unbalanced, temporarily. My freezers aren’t completely empty. I’m stocked up on foods that I use as ingredients in a balanced raw meal (uterus, brains, tripe, organ blend, fish), and that’s okay. This morning, the dogs enjoyed carp burgers from Scout and Zoe’s, a green tripe/trachea blend from GreenTripe.com, and raw eggs. They’ll have the same tonight and I’ll add duck feet to each dogs’ dish.
Cook for my dogs. I have several cookbooks and can whip up a few meals for the dogs to last until I receive my orders, do meal prep, and thaw food for the dogs.
Stop at the Asian market. I can stop at the Asian market on my way home from work and pick up some fun stuff to feed the dogs until I get my order in next week. I’ve found many of the foods that are popular with raw feeders at the Asian Market, including smelt, beef tongue, frogs legs, and more. The
frogs legs are expensive so I won’t by bring them home.
Pray that my suppliers come through. And, finally, I’m going to keep positive thoughts and pray that my supplier comes through and delivers today. It’s important to remember that buying raw while keeping at a budget does come with the occasional inconvenience. I could order food from a big raw
company, but it’ll cost me more than 3x as much and I’d rather save that money.
What do you do when you find yourself between orders?
