Do You Fast Your Dogs?
After Sydney passed away last year, I started fasting my dogs twice weekly with the hope of extending their lives. Bummer that Scout was diagnosed with cancer six months later, but maybe he's doing so great because of everything I do for him and the rest of the pack.
One fast is a raw goat's milk (or kefir) fast. I started this way because Sydney used to get hunger pukes and I didn't think I could fast her. And I couldn't fed her and not the other dogs (human guilt), so milk fast it is.
A couple of days later, I do a full fast where the dogs don't eat anything for 20-24 hours.
I was always so worried about doing this, but it's easy and the dogs don't have an issue with it.
Why I Fast My Dogs
There are many benefits to fasting, but the main reasons I fast my dogs are...
- promotes healthy gut bacteria, improving gut health
- boosts the immune system
- promotes the production of healthy cells
- kills cancer cells
- keeps dogs at a healthy weight
Some dogs self fast, not my dogs. I don't believe fasting is right for every dog and it's definitely not a good idea for puppies. But my dogs do well with a weekly fast.
Why I Fast Twice a Week
I fast twice a week because the first fast isn't a true fast - it's their milk day (20 ounces of milk or kefir or a combo, with an egg, and a
pinch of chia seeds and
spirulina/chlorella powder - split between 2 meals). I do this because raw goat's milk and
kefir...
- support gut health (because of all of that healthy bacteria)
- allow our dogs to better absorb nutrients from their meals
- are a great source of protein, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids
- support immune system heath; because 70-80% of the immune system lives in the gut, raw goat's milk can also help dogs that have allergies
And I read that kefir stops the production of yeast in the body.
So, do you fast your dogs?
