A couple of days ago, I had a Zoom call with Roxanne, Jacqueline, and their teammates Coco and Eric of Kure Pet Food. I have two pages of notes that I want to share with you and it's all GREAT news.
What is Kure Pet Food?
"Kure Pet Food is an independently farmer-owned, operated, and sourced company in the rural valleys of Pennsylvania. As a collective group of small family farms, we practice old-world agriculture. We foster good energy and healthy food from field to sea to bowl, to provide raw fermented clean food for pets. As pioneers in a new category of pet food, we uphold the highest standards and quality in the industry. Kure offers optimal
nutrition to pets by producing ethical, humane, minimally processed, chemical-free, sustainable raw whole foods.
Sourcing from our own small family farms, we do not use herbicides, pesticides, chemicals, drugs, or GMOs. We cultivate healthy, nutrient-rich soil as a fundamental element in protecting the ecosystem and being chemical-free. Our livestock live a good life in their natural habitat and eat their native diets. With the highest standard of humane treatment and handling, these animals thrive in a low-stress, non-polluted pastured
environment."
Kure Pet Food Mission Statement
"Creating the most nourishing, healthy clean food for pets, is the heart of our lifework on this planet, and it’s the goal we will always put first. Everything we do will maintain a protective, connected, and sustainable food and life ecosystem, from our small family farms, to our healthier packaging – our gift from our hardworking hands to the paws that pad across your floor. We ensure the guardianship of animals, natural
resources, good energy, and the highest quality food from soil and sea to bowl, for the lasting good of us all."
Update on Kure Pet Food
1 - Buying Kure Pet Food will be like shopping at the farmer's market; every purchase goes directly to the farmers that are creating the food and other products. There won't be organizations chipping away at the profits.
2 - The farmers are a separate entity to Kure Pet Food. The farmers came together to form Initial LLC and will manufacture Kure Pet Food.
"The invested farmers/suppliers wanted to continue the initial vision/mission of Jacqueline and Roxanne to cure pets using whole, clean and fermented foods. Hence, Initial LLC has become the parent company to the brand Kure Pet Food." Source: PetsPlusMag.com
Roxanne and Jacqueline have also formed Trinity Clean Foods and Blue Zone Research (a non-profit - not related to BlueZone.com mentioned below).
3 - Kure Pet Food is currently working with family farms in Pennsylvania. These are farmers that are devoted to their animals (both farm and companion animals). The farms are the perfect ecosystem, with humans, pets, and farm animals living together.
This return to "ancestral" (my word, not theirs) living is part of what makes Kure Pet Food different than other raw food brands.
4 - Additionally, Kure Pet Food has found other sources (for cod livers, chicken for bone broth, fish for broth, etc.) from other high-quality sources that share the same respect for animals, product quality, and a nose to tail mission (using the entire animal and reducing waste).
What's are Blue Zones?
Dan Buettner, Blue Zones founder, is a National Geographic Fellow and multiple New York Times bestselling author. He has discovered five places in the world – dubbed blue zones – where people live the longest, and are healthiest: Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece, and Loma Linda, California. Taking their experience as raw pet food manufacturers and their passion for making clean pet food that heals, Jacqueline and Roxanne are also interested in identifying Blue Zones for pets and I am here for this!!!
In our chat today, I learned that one of the farmers raises Jersey cows that live up to 15 years; the average age of a Jersey cow is 4 years. The belief is that when an area prioritizes a clean diet and the environment, this positively influences the entire population (humans, companion animals, and livestock).
Kure Pet Food Products
Although we didn't mention Answers Pet Food once during our meeting, I'm sure everyone wants to know if Kure Pet Food will be available soon and if they'll be able to get the same products that we came to know and love with Answers Pet Food.
The answer to this is "yes and no."
The products that we'll see soon (after Labor Day 2021) are:
- kefir
- raw goat's milk
- fermented fish broth (note the name change)
There are more products coming down the line with the following coming soon after the initial product releases:
- chicken bone broth
- beef formula raw pet food
- chicken formula raw pet food
- cheese
- butter
I'm so excited about the fermented butter and plan to order a case of that as soon as it's available.
Fermented Foods Trigger Fewer (to No) Sensitivities
Kure will be using fermented chicken eggs in their food. I know that this is a red flag for some but before you write off the food, keep in mind that some pets with sensitivities to chicken eggs (or chicken) do well on fermented foods.
Rodrigo and Scout have chicken sensitivities, but they both thrive on fermented chicken recipes so I'm looking forward to adding them back to their diet. Rodrigo is a senior dog and the fermented foods help reduce inflammation, reducing environmental allergies, arthritis pain (improving mobility), while supporting gut health and boosting the immune system.
Scout is a cancer survivor and I like to add fermented foods to this diet to support his immune system. And the fermented butter is going to be featured heavily into his diet as I toggle him on and off a keto diet.
Kure Pet Food Chicken Broth Sounds Promising
Another product that I'm excited about is the chicken broth, which is very gelatinous and high in collagen.
I primarily feed bone broth to support gut and joint health while boosting the immune system. I also reach for bone broth when I'm doing a modified fast or when one of
my dogs is feeling under the weather.
Although I make my own bone broth, I'm looking forward to trying the Kure Pet Food broth.
Did You Know that Cod Livers are Crazy Healthy?
Kure Pet Food will be producing a fish broth with raw fermented cod livers and fermented sardines. The reason this is exciting is that I feed fermented fish stock (and will transition to the fish broth when it's available) to my dogs daily and I learned more benefits as I was doing follow-up reading for this post.
* cod livers are a great source of Vitamins A and D, and these two vitamins work best when they are working together and are powerful antioxidants.
* thanks to the Omega-3 fatty acids, cod livers may reduce inflammation, helping the body fight infections and heal. ACADEMIC: HEALTH BENEFITS OF OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS
* cod liver oil supports bone health and, thanks to the rich source of Vitamin D, cod liver oil may also reduce age-related bone loss. STUDY: VITAMIN D AND BONE HEALTH
* cod liver oil supports joint health and eases arthritis symptoms. STUDY: EFFECTS OF COD LIVER OIL ON ARTHRITIS
* the Omega -3 fatty acids in cod livers also support eye health. STUDY: OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS AND AGE RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION
* cod livers support heart health. STUDY: FISH CONSUMPTION AND HEART DISEASE
* cod livers heal stomach and gut ulcers. STUDY: FISH OIL AND REDUCTION OF CHRONIC GUT INFLAMMATION
For these reasons, I'm thankful that we aren't losing a supplemental food (the fish broth). And, I may have promised the Kure Pet Food team that I'll drink their fish broth LIVE on social media. Stay tuned.
New Packaging for Kure Pet Food
Most products that I purchase for my dogs are packaged in plastic. Kure Pet Food will be different. Instead of a plastic-covered chub of food, Kure is using cellulose packaging with no releasing agents (nothing to leach into the food). And the packaging is compostable (better for the environment).
When Will Kure Pet Food Be Available?
Kure Pet Food is currently working on an inventory system so that they can start taking orders. After their launch next month, their products will only be available in local, independent pet stores. Unfortunately, not every state will see an influx of Kure Pet Food items right away. In order to provide the quality that Roxanne and Jacqueline are known for, they will be slowly rolling out their products across the
country.
I'm sure that it doesn't surprise anyone that there is high demand for Kure Pet Food.
At this time, I don't know of their plans for expanding into Canada. Given the pandemic, I suspect that moving into Canada will be explored after a successful launch in the US.
Clean Food Protocols are Coming Soon
One question I had for the Kure Pet Food team was "when will you start educating again?"
They're going to wait until their product launch is complete before they start hosting educational lives. They're also building content on their website, which will include Clean Food Protocols that will help us treat health conditions with Kure Pet Food products.
Dr. Doug Knueven has come on as Chief veterinarian to help them with the Clean Food Protocols and more.
