Rodrigo was diagnosed with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency in 2019 and since then I've added digestive enzymes to each of his meals. The enzymes pre-digest his food so that he can absorb the nutrients. Without the enzymes, he'll slowly starve to
death.
I have a recurring order with Enzyme Diane and I keep a container of Biocase Plus on hand as back up. When Scout was going through chemotherapy, I started adding a small amount of
the enzymes to his food as well because his gut was lacking (he started eating poop - the supplement stops this behavior). This led me to running out of the supplement (and back up) faster than I expected and we had a couple of days of no enzymes.
I was freaked so I went to Amazon to find something that would work temporarily and arrive same day (or the next day). Introducing NaturVet Digestive Enzymes.
NaturVet Digestive Enzymes
I ordered NaturVet digestive enzymes because the reviews were decent and I was desperate.
Big Mistake. HUGE!
About 30 minutes after Rodrigo ate his dinner, he started vomiting and this lasted for 20 minutes. I felt awful. I don't know what it is about this supplement that made him so sick, but I won't order it again. And I want to warn others.
Back Up Plan that Worked
I had to get Rodrigo through one more day before his supplement and back-up supplement arrived. To keep him healthy and happy, I double downed on the foods and supplements that are known to support gut health.
1 - Rodrigo enjoyed two meals of 1/2 cup kefir mixed with three tablespoons of Cannagurt by Steve's Real Food. Kefir is a powerful probiotic and CBD (an ingredient in Cannagurt) also supports gut
health.
2 - I fed him a mid-day meal of green tripe for the enzymes, mixed with bone broth, to continue to settle his gut.
3 - I added a triple dose of FullBucket to each of his meals; this is a probiotic and prebiotic with digestive enzymes (not enough for an EPI dog).
I continued doing my homework and came across Ancestral Supplements and I ordered their Pancreas and Spleen for me (anemia) and Rodrigo (additional support).
I first learned of this company from a friend who buys the supplements for herself and her dogs. A blog post about Ancestral Supplements will go live over on KeepTheTailWagging.com Thursday 9/2/2021.
