I'm out of inspiration and motivation. I'm trying to organize my day and get a jump on the mountains of unanswered emails waiting for me, unopened packages, and more. But every time I sit down to start working, I get easily distracted by my dogs' nails.
After years of trying different tools (and even hiring someone to do this burdensome chore for me), I finally settled on a
set of clippers that work for all of the dogs. And I've figured out how to clip their nails.
Each Dog's Nail Situation...
Rodrigo and Scout are the easiest of the four. They have resigned to the fact that this is going to happen. I can clip their nails in under 5 minutes and I love it. And, BONUS, their nails are white and clipping is so much easier when you're not worried about the quick.
Zoey isn't a fan but she'll let me do it. It takes about 15 minutes because she pulls back her paws a few times with each nail and I'm not able to get them as short as I like. I end up coming back a few days later to trim more.
Apollo is a nut job and almost as bad as Sydney was when it comes to getting his nails trimmed. There's lot of crying, growling, fake biting, and if you let him, he'll do alligator rolls too. It's a masterful performance. But I remain calm, keep his paw in my hand (without hurting him) and wait until he settles before clipping one nail. I eventually get his nails trimmed - and then I take a nap.
Rewarding Dogs for Nail Trims...
I used to use treats when I clipped their nails, but treats add another moving part that makes the process more complicated for me. So everyone gets lots of love when I'm finished.
I've tried using a dremel and a nail file - not for me - but I'm still opened to trying again if I get the right tool. What I really want is a nail clipper that senses the quick. I've seen a couple on the market, but they have terrible reviews.
So, what's your nail situation? What tools do you use and how long does it take for you trim your dogs' nails?
