Hi
Recently, I ran out of organ mix from
GreenTripe.com and I ordered some organ meat from a different source. Unlike GreenTripe.com's food, the new organ meat comes in containers - one liver, one heart, one kidney. I used to grind organ meat, but I decided to cut it into bite sized chucks and toss it into a mix when I did meal prep.
Great! Right?
Wrong. I added too much organ meat. I added extra heart to make sure the dogs got plenty of Vitamin B, plenty of kidney, and plenty of liver.
My worry was that the dogs wouldn't want to eat whole liver and kidneys (they don't have an issue with heart - which I feed as muscle meat). They didn't have an issue. Their butts, on the other hand, rebelled like crazy this past week.
Lots of gas and Scout had diarrhea for a couple of days.
So, what did I do?
- I took Scout off of my mix and put him on Darwin's Pet.
- I added Olewo carrots to everyone's dish for a couple of days to soothe the gut.
- I thawed 5 pounds of ground emu to offset the organ meat and all way well.
I also added duck necks and duck feet to the dishes to see if it helped stop the gas and Scout's diarrhea - it didn't work. But the dogs loved crunching their food.
I share this because we're always learning. I have four dogs and each one reacted differently to the organ meat. I was surprised that Rodrigo did well, I would have expected his gut to protest first.
When I ran out of the food, I did a
raw goat's milk fast for a day and then put all of the dogs on Darwin's to ease the gut. All is well.
So, have you over done it on organ meat or bone?
