Hi!!!
Last week, I wrote about how I protect my dogs from fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes, but I forgot one thing - PLANTS! On Sunday, J and I did yard work all day long. He planted trees and spread soil as the first step to reseeding areas of our property. I cleaned up the front of our house which was a hot mess.
Pet Safe Plants that Repel Pests
I got up early Sunday morning and hit two gardening departments for plants. I was looking for...
- Rosemary - repels fleas and ticks
- Peppermint - repels mosquitoes, spiders (which I actually like), and ants
- Catnip - repels mosquitoes
- Marigold - repels mosquitoes and aphids, they also discourage the deer from eating my vegetables
- Basil - repels mosquitoes and houseflies
- Lavender - repels mosquitoes, fleas, flies, and moths
I'm still looking for citronella, which naturally repels mosquitoes. I like to set pots citronella the plant near the chairs on our deck. Some think that these are toxic to dogs, but that's not the case. Our dogs don't seem to be impressed with my gardening. The only plants they focus on are the blueberries and raspberries.
Finding the Best Deal on Plants
I shop sales, of course, but the best deals can be found in the clearance area. I used to be nervous about buying these poor, neglected, and possibly dying plants, but my boyfriend and his mom are horticultural geniuses and while I'm don't have near their talent, I'm not afraid of the clearance plants.
We have plant fertilizer in the gardening shed and quality planting soil - I mixed the two together in wheelbarrow and a day later, you couldn't tell which plants where retain and which were clearance - they all look great!
So, what's in your flower garden? And do you have any recommendations for flowers to plant?
My next book, Keeping it Raw, 100 Questions Pet Parents Ask About Raw Feeding for Dogs, is scheduled to be published on May 20th.
I receive questions daily from people interested in learning more about raising their dogs naturally. And those questions inspired blog posts and now a book.
Mark your calendars! And keep those questions coming because this book is Volume 1.
Last week I celebrated a birthday. I used to use my birthday as an excuse to spoil myself. Nowadays, I get a big introspective as I think of what I've learned over the past year. So, I wrote a blog post...
