I'm so proud of myself! I remembered to thaw food for the dogs last night. I was exhausted, I had a lot to do before bed, and I remembered to grab food out of the freezer.
Tonight, I was lucky. Most other nights when I'm low on raw, I completely space. So here's what I do when I forgot to thaw raw for my dogs.
1 - Thaw Green Tripe Instead
It doesn't have to be green tripe; pull out something that will thaw easy and fast. For me, it's green tripe. I buy it in one pound chubs that will thaw in a few hours when placed in warm water.
Some commercial raw diets thaw quickly too. Darwin's Pet thaws in a couple of hours in warm water.
2 - I Feed a Random Meal
I start by splitting the remaining raw dog food between my dogs (if there is any). I then add the following items:
- canned sardines in water, no salt added
- canned boiled oysters
- raw or poached egg
- green beans or broccoli
3 - Feed Real Dog Box Meatballs
Real Dog Box offers meatballs that can be hydrated and fed as a meal. I either feed a meal of meatballs or I add meatballs to the above meal.
Another air dried chew that double as a meal are the Real Dog Box rabbit heads. Yes, sounds gruesome, but they come in handy.
4 - Feed a Liquid Meal
If you have it on hand, consider feeding a liquid meal. If you have a dog that does well on dairy (and it's thawed out), you're covered. My dogs weigh between 60-70 lbs and I usually feed them each 3/4 to 1 cup of raw goat's milk or kefir (or a combination of the two). For the morning meal, I add a raw egg.
I've also fed a meal of bone broth (1 cup each) or fermented fish broth (1/4 cup each). When I feed these, my dogs get three meals a day. With the raw goat's milk (and kefir) my dogs enjoy two meals daily.
5 - Fasting
And, finally, if I forget to thaw food for my dogs, then they'll enjoy a fasting day. At the moment, none of my dogs experience hunger pukes. However, if they did, I'd feed the dogs a small chew or I'd feed liquid meal.
PRO TIP: If you don't have a source for green tripe; keep a few packages of grass-fed beef on hand. I usually thaw and lightly cook the meat and mix it into the remaining raw to stretch it out.
Can Dogs Eat Dairy?
Dogs can have dairy, but not all dairy is a good fit for all dogs. Raw goat's milk is lower in lactose, making it easier to digest. But even with the lowered lactose levels, raw goat's milk doesn't work for everyone.
If you have a dog that doesn't tolerate dairy well, feed your dog bone broth instead. It's crazy easy to make and it's even easier and faster when using a pressure cooker.
I add bones (or meaty bones) to my pressure cooker, add enough water to cover the bones, add apple cider vinegar (I free pour), and cook for six hours. When complete, I allow the broth to cool and I pour it out, strain it, transfer it to glass containers, and put the bones BACK in the pressure cooker for a second round.
