Yeah, your balancing over time.
What I Say Today...
Yeah, but...
I wouldn't recommend this for a puppy.
For adult dogs, when we add extra meat and bone to the diet, we can throw the diet out of "balance," if we add too much. If that is important to you, then you should work with a meal formulator to learn the impact of those changes.
However, if you are feeding a variety of proteins and other foods and only add a couple of spoonfuls of lean ground turkey, for example, I don't see where there will be a problem.
What I Do...
We have four adult dogs and I seek to balance their diet over time, so I'm not concerned with the diet falling out of balance because I replaced some food with sardines.
I only feed one nutritionally complete commercial raw brand at the moment and feeding it in rotation of my various DIY blends is working for my dogs so I can replace some of the blends with other foods without missing a beat. I've had the dogs nutrient tested twice through ParsleyPet and they've come back with
great results.
I add the following foods to stretch out the raw and provide additional nutrients.
Fasting Adult Dogs
It may not be for every dog and it's definitely not for puppies, but fasting is another way to make raw dog food last. I fast my dogs twice a week to give their gut a break, reduce inflammation, and boost their immune systems.
PRO TIP: You can do a milk fast or bone broth fast, feeding only those meals on the "fasting" days. Or you can feed a heavier meal the evening prior to fasting days.
