I want my dog to live forever...

Or, at least set a few records.

When Sydney and Scout were diagnosed with cancer, I researched cures and treatments for hours. Stories of dogs that lived for years after a diagnosis or were miraculously cured spurred me on and I spent a lot of money on herbs, tinctures, homeopathic remedies, and natural supplements.

Looking back, I couldn't tell you what worked and what didn't work.

Today, each of my dogs receives supplements to address health issues and support their gut heath. And although I think I nailed it nutritionally, I'm still tempted by new supplements.

Before Buying a Supplement

Not all supplements work for every dog. And I suspect many supplements on the market aren't don't do what they claim.

Before I buy a supplement, I ask myself three questions:

1. Does my dog NEED this supplement OR is the health concern already covered by another supplement?
2. Will my dog benefit from this supplement OR is the brand blowing smoke up my #$%?
3. What do other pet parents have to say about the supplement?

After more than ten years of writing about dog health and nutrition, it's sad how many brands I've come across that are full of crap.

Saving Money on Supplements

Supplements aren't cheap, so I stock up...

• I shop through a local raw food co-op.
• I set up recurring orders to save.
• I use an app that searches for discount codes.
• I do the bulk of my orders on Black Friday.

And, if you're a content creator, you can get free supplements in exchange for an honest review. Start by promoting supplements you already buy on social media and tag the brand.

Read the Reviews

I only listen to people I know and trust when it comes to supplementation. And I look for online reviews as often as possible.

It's easy to be led astray by well intended dog lovers on social media. So, do your own homework before spending your hard earned income on a supplement that may not work for your dog.
