I sit on the board of directors of a local rescue and see the realities of homeless dogs and
irresponsible breeding daily If we required prospective dog owners to feed raw, we wouldn't be able to help the number of dogs we currently save every year.
The Cost of Meat is Rising
I recently had to remove one of my favorite proteins from the rotation - quail. It's now more than $7/lb. Whole quail is double that price. I
get it, costs are going up for everyone and they need to be passed down to the consumer.
Losing one protein isn't a hardship for me, because I'm
still feeding duck, pork, beef, and chicken. But what if my dogs were allergic to beef and chicken? What if I couldn't afford duck?
Saving Money on Raw
My average monthly budget used to be $250 for four big dogs. Today, it's a challenge to keep it at $300. During the year, I'm primarily ordering meat, bones, base mixes, and treats. I place bulk orders of supplements two or times a year.
I'm able to save money by...
- creating a budget and sticking to it
- shopping sales at grocery store, outlet stores, Walmart, ethnic markets, and pet stores
- signing up for the newsletters of my
favorite brands so I learn about sales early
- accepting freezer dumps from friends - these are great for treats
- freezing subscriptions and recurring orders when I don't need them
- ordering in bulk
- anything I can make myself, I do - veggie mix, bone broth, dog food
