Weekly Raw Feeding Tips
A common question I receive is "how do you figure out how much to feed your dog?"
There's an easy answer
to this, but I want to share what works for my dogs. There are three steps I take to calculate how much to feed each of my dogs.
1 - Start with 2.5% of body weight
Or use a raw food calculator. There are many online calculators; my favorite is by Feed Real.
2 - Track Your Dog's Weight
I weigh my dogs' meals and track their weight weekly (with an at-home scale), and adjust how much I feed up and down based on if their
gaining or losing weight.
3 - Adjust Seasonally
I also keep track of my dogs' activity. In the winter, we get
out a lot less than the rest of the year, so I shave off an ounce or two for their meals to prevent winter weight gain.
I Weigh Every Meal
Whether I'm feeding a standard meal, a meal of raw meaty bones, or raw goat's milk (or kefir). I measure each meal and, over time, I've found the right amount of each to feed each of my dogs.
Some protein blends are heavier than others. I don't worry about this because I balance over time.
This May Not Work for Everyone
What works for me and my dogs may not work for others. I've found that we follow one
path and adjust to meet our individual dog's specific needs.
Some dogs have a higher metabolism than others. Puppies eat significantly more than adult dogs. There are many quirks that we may need to consider, but it's a breeze.
Happy Counting!!!
