Weekly Raw Feeding Tip
Alternating proteins when you're new to raw isn't always a great idea.
We're told to alternate proteins (and
other ingredients) in our dogs' diet. I alternate the main protein weekly with the goal of balancing over time. But when I have a dog that's new to raw feeding, I start with a single protein, feeding it for a few weeks before introducing something new.
1 - Easier on the Gut
Although raw feeding is more bioavailable, switching to a raw diet can spark digestive upset in some dogs. By sticking with a single protein for a few weeks, I give a dog's gut time to adjust
to the new diet before introducing new ingredients.
2 - Helps to Identify Sensitivities
Introducing too many
proteins makes it difficult to identify sensitivities; I won't know which protein is causing digestive upset or allergy symptoms.
3 - Easier on the Wallet
Alternating every few weeks, feeding affordable proteins (e.g., chicken, turkey, beef, and pork), allows me to feed raw on a more reasonable budget.
Alternating Other Ingredients
When I talk about alternating proteins, I'm referring to main proteins, not organ meat; although the later is important too.
When feeding commercial raw, brand generally formulate a meal using one protein. When I make my DIY
grinds, I use beef, pork, and lamb organs with all of my recipes. I alternate the organ meat with each meal prep (every other month).
Alternating Supplements
I also alternate supplements - I have three options for joint supplements, digestive supplements, etc. I began doing this in 2020 when supply lines slowed down. I like to have options in case shipping stalls, a formulation changes, or a product is discontinued.
I only use supplements 5 days
weekly; I take a break on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
