Celebrating Women's Strength and Impact: A Salute to Women's History Month and International Women's Day

As we advance throughout Women's History Month, let us stand tall in celebrating the indomitable spirit and resilience of women worldwide.

Over 54% of the nonprofit organizations listed in SBC’s online directory are women-led organizations. Now is a great time to honour the changemakers and every woman who fights for equality, justice, and a better world.

One of the most legendary activist in history, Harriet Tubman once said:

If you see the torches in the woods, keep going.

If there's shouting after you, keep going.

Don't ever stop. Keep going. If you want a taste of freedom, keep going.”

We must ALWAYS be strong together and uplift the voices of women every chance we get, especially those leading in the nonprofit sector.

The Global Black Philanthropy Initiative

On December 2nd, 2020, CBC ran an article report stating that “Black organizations receive as little as 7 cents for every $100 donated to Canada’s big charities, study finds.”

We asked ourselves “What can we do to bridge this gap?”

We decided to launch the Global Black Philanthropy Initiative (GBPI) by coupling GBPI with the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) as defined by the United Nations countless lives are being transformed.

Each month we spotlight different SDGs to raise awareness and educate on the importance of aligning our community efforts with global goals. As a result, we have raised $2,370 Canadian dollars since August 2023.

For March, we’re focusing on SDG#5: Gender Equality to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls around the world.

Hand in Hand Eastern Africa
(HiH EA) and the Fanikisha Hub

We are proud to feature Hand in Hand Eastern Africa (HiH EA), a beacon of hope and empowerment in the nonprofit world.

HiH EA is a member of the Hand in Hand Global Network that comprises affiliated organizations that mutually pursue the shared goal of poverty alleviation while supporting poorer communities to develop sustainable enterprises and jobs. The organization strives to work with marginalized communities in the areas of economic and social empowerment using a participatory approach aimed at supporting people overcome poverty and vulnerability through the development of sustainable enterprises.

The approach is based on a philosophy of self-help, providing training, skills and support to enable poor people, particularly women and youth, to create and sustain self-driven, market-based, economic activities.

As part of the global Hand in Hand network, HiH EA dedicates itself to alleviating poverty and supporting marginalized communities in achieving sustainable enterprises and jobs. Their remarkable Fanikisha program stands out as a pioneering initiative, designed to bridge the gap between small-scale producers and the market, ensuring transparency and direct access, free from exploitation.

SBC is the only organization dedicated to increasing the visibility of Black-led, Black-serving, and Black-focused organizations worldwide while working to boost charitable giving within the global Black Community. Your support can have a global impact by helping support all Black-focused, Black-led, and/or Black-serving organizations worldwide. We will also provide a tax receipt for all donations.

Here’s how we are fulfilling our mission:

We are continuously engaging with active and impactful organizations to grow our online directory.
We feature organizations, their programs, their events, or their executive/volunteer teams on Social Media to amplify their mission.
We bring attention to and raise awareness of issues or matters specific to the Black experience.
We look for valuable resources for organizations to share on our website’s Resource page. (Ex: grants, funding, courses, etc.)
We actively promote our vetted directory to attract volunteers and potential donors to find Black organizations to support or engage with.
