How to celebrate the Lord’s Supper at home
During Covid
How often do you celebrate the Lord’s Supper?
Once a month?
Do you wait for the church to offer it?
Do you celebrate it on your own at home? Have you considered this possibility?
The Lord’s supper is not a denominational decision it is a personal decision.
What the COVID crises has helped us see is that we don’t need a building to honor the commands mentioned in Scripture.
We don’t need a building for prayer, we don’t need a building for worship, we don’t need a building for celebrating the Lord’s supper.
We ARE called to come together for all those reasons and our corporate worship benefits each of us when we do, but it is not a requirement especially during a crises such as today.
It is a privilege to know that God will meet us in our homes. The Lord’s supper is just as personal and relevant when we do it by ourselves or with our family.
The weekly Sabbath that is commanded to keep from the early days in the Old Testament till today is a weekly reminder of the need for our personal gathering in our homes to meet with Him and share in His
goodness.
The Lord’s Supper is another commandment to keep.
Here are some tips for celebrating at home.
When: Set a time and day for your personal Lord’s supper. Will it be in the morning during your devotion? Will it be prior to dinner?
Will it be an afternoon refreshment to meet with the Lord and remember all He has done?
There have been times in my life where I made this a daily event to just celebrate this drink and unleavened bread as I sit with Him and meditate on His words.
These can be times when you need direction or just a time of reflection.
As the world searches for inner peace through many channels (yoga, worshiping angels, mysticism, etc.) meditation on God’s Word while enjoying the Lord’s supper is far more powerful
spiritually!
Who is invited: will you sup by yourself or invite your family?
What to serve?
Bread - Here is a video of how to make unleavened bread.
If you are not ready for the fun of making your own there are several matzo options at the store or saltine crackers will work.
Watch for these ingredients in store bought products: baking powder, baking soda, yeast, yeast extract or natural leavening agents (unknown food factor)
Wine – any grape or pomegranate juice will suffice. Not all grapes are red or purple; those are beneficial for paintings but not a biblical necessity. My preference is choose organic juice since the pesticide load is high
in conventionally raised fruits.
How to participate in the Lord’s supper at home?
This is simple – since there won't be a deacon to pass the plate of tiny - bland tasting cubes – and tiny juice cups – you get to enjoy a large piece of unleavened bread and a large glass of juice.
This means you can meditate on God’s Word for 10 minutes or a full hour.
Oh, MY!
Imagine meditating with God for one full hour!
Glory Be!
Suggestions:
By Yourself - My favorite time is in the morning. I like to have the juice and bread ready before I go to bed. Then in the morning I go to my sitting room and just try to concentrate on all God is doing in my life and around
me.
Focus on what the bread and juice symbolize – His gift of eternal life! His precious gift of His love for me. His delicately planned purpose for my life and how that fits into His plan.
This sounds like it is all about me –it is not. It is all about HIM! What He is doing, how He is doing it and Why He is doing it!
The world focuses on me – God desires we focus on HIM!
There is no rule to eating bread first and then drinking the juice – in fact in Luke 22 Jesus offered the cup first then the bread. Don’t get hung up in particulars – they can be a distraction.
Take your time.
Sip and chew. Don’t guzzle and chomp! 😊 Let the time be cherished.
As a family – just before dinner is the perfect time to share in the Lord’s supper.
Take time to read as a family Luke 22:14 – 22. Have the children take turns serving each other the juice and bread.
Ask questions: Who is the greatest?
What are you willing to do for the Lord?
What has the Lord done for you this week?
Have you ever betrayed your faith in front of others?
Even greater – make the Lord’s supper a weekly affair.
Remember the more we engage all senses with our children while discovering the Truths in God’s Word the more they will remember God’s promises.
