If you have a pot at your front door, a plant in your home or a field to cultivate - you can garden.

    I have been busy growing as many of the 7 foods of the promised land as possible. I have also made several videos in front of my fig tree. It has provided buckets of figs. Yet, this past year we realized it is growing roots - EVERYWHERE!

Roots growing under our home, in all my garden boxes, around my blueberries. I now know the fertilizer is working  - too well!

We are in root trouble.

 

So, I am sad to say I have to cut down my fig tree and try to save it to transplant.

 

Since I was not sure how well it would move this coming spring I have cut several twigs from the branches last fall and planted them in a  planter in the house.

 

I had a little hope this would work yet,  I was so excited to see leaves coming from the twigs I planted.

 

My fig saplings are starting to take off!

 

Now I know I can plant a field of figs. I will not be without!

 

I share this because if you only have indoors - you can grow a garden.

 

If you desire a larger plot then look for someone with a field and ask if you can grow a small garden on their property. Be brave and ask.
They can say  - YES!

 

Should your garden be close to water?

 

My gardening friend here says to let God do the watering. So your location doesn't need to be near a hose. And you don't need a garden tiller. Just a shovel, seeds and prayers.

Seed catalogs are arriving in the mail and for me I love them better than I used to love the Christmas catalogs when I was young.

 

Yet, I have made the mistake of what looked delicious on the page did not always meet my families taste buds.

 

So, plan what they will eat and enjoy.

 

Then add 2-3 surprises!

 

When making plans for what to plant - check to see if the deer love it first. They love a delicious salad bar that you have worked hard to enjoy.
 

Choosing Seeds - look for heirloom and guaranteed non-GMO.

 

Here are three companies to investigate:

 

Baker Creek - they are located near Springfield Mo and a total delight to visit. Lovely gardens, restaurant and shop.  Their seeds are high quality. Be sure to request their catalog - gorgeous pictures and exciting seeds to try.

 

Burpee  popular yet they sell all kinds of seeds. So be careful on your purchase.

Annies Heirloom Seeds is another great option.

 

These three companies will get your mouth watering as you browse their sites and ask for their catalogs.

This is important. Study each seed you are planting. When is it best for your area to plant? Know your zones.

 

Does it do best planted indoors first? If you are new to gardening this is important.

 

I usually love going to the garden shop and getting onion sets, yet this last year I started my onions from seeds. I was surprised how well they did.

 

Google online Planting Calendar  - then add your area; such as Australia, New Zealand, zone 7, etc. The calendars are especially helpful to remove the guessing.

 

With good planning you can plant several new varieties in the same space if you plant early, plant in mid season and then do a fall planting. 

A good garden produces from April with greens like spinach, all the way to October with sweet potatoes.

Let this year be the time of planting.

 

Let this year also be the time of harvesting as we share the Gospel everywhere we go. People are in fear. We have the answer.

 

People are hungry - we can feed them from the garden and from the Word.
