"Your Great Name"

Message summary: We urge you today to join the Psalmist and scores of believers through the ages in a simple proclamation: "I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart".

“I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart” (Psalm 138:1). "For the Lord will not abandon His people on account of His great name, because the Lord has been pleased to make you a people for Himself" (1 Samuel 12:22). "There is none like You, O Lord; You are great, and Your name is great in might" (Jeremiah 10:6).

Hopefully you were able to join with other believers in a congregational setting on Sunday to lift your voices in worship to Almighty God through prayer and song, and to hear the Bible preached by a faithful pastor. Not only do we worship with other believers on Sunday but we also become aware of the many burdens our brothers and sisters bear daily.

Brooksyne sang in choir for all three services so she left the house at 6:15 am and we really didn't get to talk together until she got home later in the afternoon. When we began to talk about our morning at church we each had stories to share of people going through tremendous hardships and sorrows.

Let us share three examples from encounters we had yesterday:

1) I visited with a man I'll call Bill. I had never met him before walking into the church from the parking lot as we chatted about the pleasant weather. After walking inside Bill greeted a friend who detected something was wrong. He shared that he had just been diagnosed with ALS and it struck me immediately that he has a very hard road ahead, as we've known several who've gone through this debiliating disease. I prayed he might find strength and encouragement from his choosing to "not to neglect meeting together... but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near" (Hebrews 10:25).

2) Brooksyne visits with other choir members during their breaks after warm up and between the services. She came home burdened for several choir members including one who is heavily burdened for her son and daughter-in-law who provide round the clock care for their adult twin daughters born with cerebral palsy. One daughter requires more attention than the other but it is physically and emotionally exhausting. And now their mother is having health issues of her own that she pushes aside to give care to her needy daughters.

3) We normally attend the middle service at 9:30 AM and, in most churches I've pastored or attended people sit in the same seats every week. We do the same and refer we refer to those who sit by or near us as our pew neighbors. Often sitting behind us is John and Ethel. Several weeks ago they were excited about a trip to an island near Puerto Rico. But John became very sick during the trip and had to be life-flighted back to Lancaster and died this last Friday evening. We were surprised and our hearts were warmed to see Ethel in her regular spot yesterday expressing faith. We visited with her for a few minutes and were heartened by her peace and assurance.

We thought of these needs and many others when the choir led out in the song, "Your Great Name", especially this verse:

All the weak find their strength
At the sound of Your great name
Hungry souls receive grace
At the sound of Your great name
The fatherless, they find their rest
At the sound of Your great name
The sick are healed and the dead are raised
At the sound of Your great name

The simple statement in the first daily text should be a practice of all believers. The Psalmist exclaimed, “I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart” (Psalm 138:1). Among the certainties of God’s will for each of us is that we are called to praise the Lord. Interestingly the final verse in all the Psalms exclaims, “Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD” (Psalm 150:6).

Today some of you are dealing with a heavy heart regarding a pressing matter. You may find God’s call to praise Him very hard and you might even be resisting this call to praise. Perhaps you've been deeply hurt and just don’t understand God’s ways in regard to your circumstances at all. The call to praise is not conditioned upon our ability to understand all His ways. We urge you today to join the Psalmist and scores of believers through the ages in a simple proclamation: "I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart".

Be encouraged today, (Hebrews 3:13)

Daily prayer: Father, we want to bless You at all times and in all circumstances. May praise continually be uttered from our lips as it overflows from our heart. Whatever we are going through, and however long its duration may it not deter us from giving You praise and thanksgiving for who You are and all that You do on our behalf. As we seek You we find Your all-sufficiency to be our strength, power and might. In the wonderful name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Brooksyne's Note: I listened to this song on Saturday after Gospel Greats radio host, Rodney Baucom, interviewed the bass soloist. He said the lyrics speak so deeply to his heart that he had difficulty recording it as he would break up and have to start again. I love the words and I really enjoy his beautiful bass voice:
