“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love” (Ephesians 4:2). "Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up" (James 4:10).

Stauffer's of Kissel Hill is a grocery store in our town that has a special section for items nearing expiration date that are discounted. Since we both like good deals and are flexible in our culinary tastes and enjoy the variety, Brooksyne often checks this section out and we never know what she will find.

The last several years we have enjoyed sushi, although not the raw fish kind, and periodically the discount section has a couple of small trays of sushi. She came home from Stauffer's the other day after shopping and, as she got out of the car, she lifted a bag of groceries and yelled out, "I found Shih Tzu!"

Readers who have quick minds have already figured out that she had confused our dog's breed, Shih Tzu with the edible item, sushi. I immediately feigned alarm as I responded, "O no, don't let Sadie hear that".

Brooksyne had a puzzled look after my comment, took a couple of seconds to think it through and then she had a good laugh at herself once she realized she had mistaken "Shih Tzu" for "sushi". I've teased her quite often since that day and get a rouse out of her, because she is extremely fond of Sadie and would never think of doing any harm to her.

Misspeaking is a colorful part of life and we've all done it. It certainly has a way of keeping us humble!

Our of our all-time funniest recollections of a misspeak happened many years ago when Brooksyne, Ester and I dined in the Crystal Dining Room, a fine historic restaurant in the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. The hotel sits on the top of a mountain overlooking the charming Victorian resort village.

Following our meal the server came over to our table and asked, “Are you ready for your deodorant?” After Ester, Brooksyne and I exchanged quizzical looks at each other, I responded to the effect, “Well, do you really think I need it?" I lifted my arms up one at a time pretending to sniff and told her, "I just showered this morning!”

Her face reddened as she realized what had come from her lips. I think she was as shocked at her words as we were. She quickly explained her rather forward question, “I got my tongue tied and meant to ask, ‘Are you ready to order desert?’”

That misspeak made our trip back to Pennsylvania so much fun as, all along the way, one of us would blurt out, "Are you ready for your deodorant?" and we'd break into uproarious laughter all over again. Even as we are writing this message today we are laughing again!

Once on WDAC, our local Christian radio station, the announcer gave a brief weather report and announced, "We have 75% humility". She immediately recognized that she had misspoken and corrected the word to humidity and then made a quip about being humble.

Unintentionally misspeaking is one of the ways God uses to humble me. I recall leading a group in the Lord’s Prayer and since I have been in settings where leaders use “trespasses” and some use “debts” I tend to get confused at this point. When I came to this part I said “Forgive us our debtpasses”. (An Amish friend says he just says “sins” and is sure that covers it all.)

The Biblical standard for humility is 100%. Notice in the daily Scripture text Paul writes "Be completely humble". This is an aspiration that I suppose few of us have attained. Are any of you reading this really completely humble? Actually it seems to me that anyone making such a claim would be proud of their humility thus negating being completely humble! It's been said, "Humility is that elusive virtue that once you think you have it, you’ve lost it”.

The Bible describes humility as being free from pride and arrogance. Jesus taught that humility is the pathway to exaltation by God for "everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted" (Luke 18:14). The cross comes before the crown.

Peter wrote, “All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (1 Peter 5:5). Today may we all clothed in humility!

Be encouraged today, (Hebrews 3:13)

Daily prayer: Jesus, we know that none of us are 100% humble, in these mortal, fallible bodies of ours. But we do know that You are completely humble and we look to You as our example. As we clothe ourselves in Your righteousness we can overcome the pride that is ever before us. We recognize that no good thing can come from us, but all that is good comes from You. Remind us daily that gratitude is the antidote for feelings of pride. When we acknowledge that everything we have and all that we are is due to Your merciful blessings we are humbled and grateful to You, the Giver of every good and perfect gift. Amen.
