Anchor

"Christ the Sure and Steady Anchor"
(Part 2)

Note: All this week we will use both the same verse and theme song as we consider twelve types of hope we have in Christ, highlighting three each day.

"We who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure" (Hebrews 6:19).

Each day this week we are focusing on Hebrews 6:19 and featuring the theme song "Christ the Sure and Steady Anchor".

Christ the sure and steady Anchor
While the tempest rages on
When temptation claims the battle
And it seems the night has won

Deeper still then goes the Anchor
Though I justly stand accused
I will hold fast to the Anchor
It shall never be removed

1) "Christ the Sure and Steady Anchor" is a saving hope.

“For in this hope we were saved” (Romans 8:24). "We have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe" (1 Timothy 4:10). Foundational to embracing saving hope is accepting God's offer of salvation. Paul wrote, "Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope" (1 Thessalonians 4:13).

2) "Christ the Sure and Steady Anchor" is a constant hope.

The Psalmist wrote, "My hope is in you all day long" (Psalm 25:5). Our spiritual hope in Christ doesn't diminish or fluctuate due to the vagaries of life. We should resolve to keep our hope and focus on God all through the day, every day. "When morning dawns and evening fades You call forth songs of joy" (Psalm 65:8).

3) "Christ the Sure and Steady Anchor" is a strength-renewing hope.

"Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength" (Isaiah 40:31). This is the great passage that speaks of mounting up with wings like eagles. The struggles and disappointments of life can be wearying and drain us of hope. If we go forth in our own strength we will soon exhaust our source of joyful hope and fail miserably. Being reminded of our sure and steady anchor is strength-renewing. When our hearts, filled with hope, are mounted in heaven we will be carried above the difficulties, and be stronger in our faith and firm in our resolve to remain faithful.

The classic hymn "He Giveth More Grace" reminds us God's renewing strength:

When we have exhausted our store of endurance,
When our strength has failed ere the day is half done,
When we reach the end of our hoarded resources
Our Father’s full giving is only begun.

Place your faith in Christ the sure and steady Anchor who provides our salvation, a constant hope and strength for each day!

Christ the sure of our salvation,
Ever faithful, ever true!
We will hold fast to the anchor,
It shall never be removed.

Be encouraged today, (Hebrews 3:13)

Praying manDaily prayer:  Father, just as an anchor is designed to keep a vessel from drifting we do not want to drift from the faith we have placed in Christ our Lord. We want to be grounded firm and deep in the Savior's love so we anchor our hearts to the Rock which cannot move. Let us be like sea urchin, anemones, and other resilient inter-tidal species that cling to the faces of rocks in the sea. By clinging to the Solid Rock we will combat the storms, the winds, and currents that would seek to move us off course into sinking sand and away from our eternal destination of heaven. Keep us focused on our heavenly home we pray. Amen.
