 "Knit Together In
Utero"

"For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well" (Psalm 139:13,14).  Yesterday many churches here in America acknowledged "Sanctity Of Human Life Sunday" including the church we attend. In the foyer a couple of cribs were loaded with baby bottles. Those attending are encouraged to pick up one or more bottles and fill them with a check or their change over the next several weeks
to help support Align Life Ministries, a tremendous local organization that stands for the values of life providing pregnancy tests, prenatal & parenting education, sexual integrity education and post-abortion counseling. This coming Sunday we both hope to be in church and will volunteer together in distributing these
bottles.
We unapologetically take a strong stand for the Sanctity of Life; for the protection of the unborn, the infirmed, and the elderly; for those the
world regards as being unworthy of life, those reckoned as "the least of these" as we shared in last Friday's message.
Today let us consider just one aspect of the phrase "fearfully and wonderfully made"
in our daily text.
Each of us began our life at our conception as a separate single cell. Within eight weeks our bodies were fully formed, in many cases before our
mother even realized that she was pregnant. During the next nine months we grew in our mother's womb and nothing new was added but water, oxygen and nutrition. Our entire genetic makeup was contained in that single cell. We had never existed before and there will never be another of us. Thankfully for me and my parents, who loved me, this process was not interrupted and after nine months of being "knit together" in utero I was born. (In Latin, "in utero" means "in
the womb" or "in the uterus".)
In developmental terms as measured by cell replication, we spend 90 percent of our lives in utero. From fertilization to natural death, there exists an unbroken continuum of human development during which we need only oxygen, water, and
nutrients to live and develop physically.By the time we are born this one single cell became two hundred million cells and at birth we weighed six billion times more than the fertilized egg. If we had continued at this rate of growth by our first birthday we would have weighed 72,000,000,000 pounds, which would have been an extremely "heavy" burden for our Moms. Today's Bible text is so powerful. Note what it says and doesn't say.
"The science of embryology establishes that from the earliest stages of development, you were a distinct, living and whole human being. You
weren’t part of another human being like skin cells on the back of my hand; you were already a whole living member of the human family even though you had yet to mature.
"There is no essential difference between the embryo you once were and the adult you are today that somehow justifies killing you at that earlier stage of development. Differences of size, level of development, environment and degree of dependency are not good reasons for saying you could be killed then but not now." Today let us recognize and contend for the sanctity of life!

Daily prayer:
Father, thank You for creating my inmost parts: You knit me together in my mother's womb and for that I praise and thank you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Everything in all of Your creation is amazing and perfectly formed for Your glory and for our good. While proponents of abortion speak in terms of inconvenience, death, and doing away with the very one You created, we who are
pro-life speak in terms of nurturing, loving, and giving thanks for new life. Bless and empower those who sacrificially take a stand and lovingly raise their voice to affirm life and reject any law, political movement, or other powerful lobbies that seek to present abortion as an acceptable form of birth control. In Jesus' name we pray.

Here's a photo I found that was taken in the late-eighties at the "March For Life" in Washington. I am the tall man in the red jacket
holding the sign! I note that there are two friends from our church standing behind me, Chris and Kandy. Jim, a pastor friend from the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, is standing in front of me. This march was held again, as it is every year, this last Friday. Pennsylvania will hold a pro-life rally October 16th at the state
capital.
 It was very cold when we went to the March For Life in 2013. This is right before we got back on the bus to return to Lancaster County and we were both very cold and tired.
Health update:
Tomorrow will mark three weeks since my abdominal surgery. I feel I am improving and gaining strength though my voice is weak
and raspier than usual. I expect to stay home this week but hope to attend church this next Lord's Day. By next week perhaps I can join Brooksyne in some of our chaplain visitation. My follow-up appointment with the surgeon is mid February. Once again, I am very grateful for your prayers and interest on my behalf. We continue to get your cards and
emails.
