"But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!" (1 Corinthians 15:57). "In all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us" (Romans 8:37).

We will lift our eyes
We won’t fear the fight
There is one who’s stronger
Hard pressed on each side
We will not lose sight
Of the one who’s greater

For several months we were praying for Elliot, a five year old boy in our church fighting a brain tumor just diagnosed in November. In the providence of God* he went to be with the Lord last week. It is a very hard time for his family and of course they are dealing with the inevitable "why" questions. But we were heartened by the faith of his young parents and grandparents. In spite of their very brief time with their son and grandson on this side of glory, ultimate victory was powerfully expressed at his funeral service.

We contrast that small child with another death last week. Dennis is a fellow teacher whose mother entered into glory shortly after celebrating 100 years of age. Certainly there is sadness amongst family members and friends, but surely no one is expressing an, "It just doesn't seem fair" sentiment about her centenarian death!

What a blessing and eternal perspective to realize that in Christ both situations are equally victorious.

We are all presently in the midst of a great spiritual contest and sometimes with our eyes what we see doesn't look much like victory. But the Bible informs us (those who follow and obey Christ) are on the victorious side. Perhaps many of you have seen the preacher hold up his Bible and declare, "I looked ahead to the back of the book and 'We Win!'" I think I've done that a time or two myself!

We all will face the inevitable moments of discouragement and disappointment, of just not understanding. In the midst of these questions hold onto this extremely important truth Paul writes about in Romans 8:37, "We are more than conquerors through our Lord Jesus Christ".

Yes, there are setbacks for every believer and even seeming losses in this great spiritual contest. But God turns our losses into gains, our failures into His victory, our conflict into His peace, and our weakness into His strength. The all-surpassing power from God is seen through the endurance of the believer in the midst of life's ups and downs.

The two daily verses complement each other. Both have a similar underlying Greek word that is very familiar to those who enjoy sports. That word is "nikos." The popular sports shoe company, Nike, is based on this word.

Romans 8:37In the first daily text the word is simply translated "victory." In the second verse it's a part of the wonderful Greek compound word "hupernikomen" which means "to be more than a conqueror, to gain a surpassing victory." Early on I taught Ester to use this word to describe herself in the overcomings she has experienced as a heart patient and other setbacks in life as well.

Today she is celebrating her 34th birthday - a number we might take for granted or even be troubled by at that point in our lives, realizing the clock is ticking away. But not many years before Ester's birth in 1989, she would have lived only weeks, perhaps a year or two, for there was no long-term medical solution for her complex congenital heart disease (Pulmonary Atresia).

Paul encourages us not to lose heart as he describes the challenging turmoil believers suffer and their  triumphant outcome: "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed" (2 Corinthians 4:9).

But Paul continues with this spiritual diamond of inestimable value, "Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. Our momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal" (2 Corinthians 4:16-18).

God's Word says, "He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" and "in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us". Let these blessed truths encourage you today as you consider our ultimate, eternal victory we have through our eternal Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

One name, one name holds every victory
One voice that silences the enemy
One king who reigns for all eternity
Jesus, Jesus

Oh, the battle is the Lord’s
Oh, the victory is Yours

Be encouraged today, ( Hebrews 3:13)

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, none of the victories we've experienced here on earth will compare with the overwhelming joy we'll feel at the ultimate victory celebration in heaven. We'll rejoice with the saints from all generations telling of the marvelous saving and sustaining power of Christ. We look forward to sharing stories about the times we faced trouble, hardship, persecution or danger and the miraculous way that You sustained us through those difficulties. Perhaps we'll share our testimonies at the marriage supper of the Lamb with other overcomers. We're not there yet, so help us to keep on keeping on, until that glorious day when we see Christ face to face! It is in the matchless name of Jesus that we pray. Amen.

Spring is right around the corner so we purchased our first seasonal flowers. Gardeners would know right away that the flower of choice this early in the season is pansies.  Brooksyne expects to plant them in the raised bed today.

A friend of ours shared this photo of geese flying with the moon in the background.
It looks like the geese are closer to the moon than earth!
