Baby doll lamb on Old Windmill Farm
This "Baby Doll" Southdown sheep on the Old Windmill Farm appears to be smiling up at Brooksyne as she took this photo a few years ago! I wonder if she's thinking that she might have a napkin to clear her mouth of leftover grass.

"Eternity In The Heart"

Message summary: God has given the sense of eternity to His human creation.

"He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end" (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

Million yearsTraveling across the rural roads we we many signs expressing faith. For several weeks a sign along a road we take in rural Lebanon County posed this question, "Where Will You Be A Million Years From Now?" I wonder how many have given much thought to that!

In my lifetime I have been to many thousands of church services and other meetings and heard a similar amount of sermons and teachings. I only recall the specificities of a tiny few of them, but readily acknowledge that all exposure to truth has been beneficial and has incrementally helped build the foundation of my Christian faith.

But I distinctly recall a Sunday evening service when I was a young Christian in high school in the early 1970's. I was visiting the Sycamore Hills Baptist Church on 39th Street in Independence Missouri (I checked and it's still there!).

While singing “Amazing Grace” the song leader got to the final stanza that says, “When we’ve been there ten thousand years” and then he stopped the musicians. He then instructed the church to replace the number “thousand” with “million”. So we sang, “When we’ve been there ten million years.” That first experience has stayed with me though I’ve sung it many times since then with “ten million”. It intrigues me that regardless of whatever gargantuan number replaces “thousand” it’s still true! That’s the nature of eternity.

The daily verse states that "He (God) has set eternity in the hearts of men" .  We certainly have a knowledge of past history and we also have a sense of eternity future. As we progress in age we are especially mindful that ours is a temporal life. It's but a short moment within the span of our eternal life.

Mollie My next illustration may sound kind of corny but demonstrates how my musing mind works. The text states, "He (God) has set eternity in the hearts of men" . Of course in this context I believe this means mankind and does not exclude women! But do other members of the animal kingdom have any sense of eternity like we do?

At 12½ years old our border collie Mollie is likely nearing the end of her life span (they most typically live to be 12 years old). She's losing her hearing and seems to be in pain similar to our arthritis. But we really can't explain to her just how aging works.

We wonder if she may remember particulars about her past, the fun times she had in her doggie youth but we certainly have no reason to believe she has any sense of history before her existence, let alone eternity future. But God has given the sense of eternity to His human creation.

Today we may have many issues in life that trouble us. There seems to be so much increasing uncertainty and we continue to live under the specter of terror. Consider God's love for you and recognize that we just "cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end". Indeed His blessings are unfathomable! And when all is said and done we can have an assurance that, "He has made everything beautiful in its time.

When we've been there ten million years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we first begun!

Be encouraged today, ( Hebrews 3:13)

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, You have set eternity in the hearts of Your people though it is impossible for us to comprehend all that You have done from eternity past to eternity future. Your existence spans eternity for You always have been and always will be. As Your children, we await the next really big event of Christ’s return and joyfully anticipate His appearing where He invites us to take our first step inside the pearly gates where we will view the home He has prepared for us and the New Jerusalem He has prepared for the saints of all ages. Ten million years later we’ll still be singing Your praise and giving thanks that there is no end to our days nor to our unbounding joy. It is through Jesus that we have this unending access to heaven and it is in His name that we pray. Amen.

Nap time
If Stephen sits down in this chair it's a signal to the pets that he's going to take a power nap. They come running from every direction and make themselves comfortable atop their "Grandpoppy" as Ester has named him. Mollie is also present though you have to look closely as she's curled up in her bed under the table. In this photo taken yesterday after Stephen came home from a meeting he fell asleep first, then the dogs took a few minutes to get comfy and also fell asleep.

Mollie jumping
Mollie had remarkable athletic abilities and determination in her youth that could not be deterred. She eventually got the ring every time.

Here's a photo of Mollie chasing after a frisbee in the snow.
