"Little Things Do Matter"

Message summary: Life is made up of many little things that form the composite of who we are. Little things can have a big impact (either for good or bad).

“The one who is faithful in a very little thing is also faithful in much; and the one who is unrighteous in a very little thing is also unrighteous in much" (Luke 16:10). "'Well done, my good servant!' his master replied, 'Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter'" (Luke 19:17a).

For several months we have had low water pressure in our house. We have a well and I've wondered if the problem had to do with the expansion tank and if it might need to be replaced. It appears to be the original from when our house was built in 1986 so it certainly has had a long life. Yesterday morning I finally concluded it was time to call the JK Mechanical plumber and get the problem resolved.

When I was getting information off the expansion tank to give to the plumber which I assumed to be the problem (a big, expensive problem.) However I had missed a detail that was right under my nose. I looked up and saw the whole house water filter was very dirty (a small, inexpensive problem).

After discovering that problem I put a new filter in and our water pressure problem has been solved.It's great to have water pressure again! I told my friend Jesse about it and he said I would probably get a lesson from it. At the least I considered the embarrassment and expense of having a plumber over only to be told I needed to replace a water filter! (Something I can and should do myself. In fact I have done it many times.)

But it also caused me to muse on the topic of little things. There are so many examples that illustrate that little does matter. It began in the Garden of Eden. Perhaps among the excuses the fallen first couple had was that God's command just didn't seem like that big of a deal. They may have considered that eating the forbidden fruit was just a "little thing".

But I also consider the many little things in which we can demonstrate faithfulness.

The first text contrasts the results of faithfulness in "very little things" and of unrighteousness in "very little things".

In the second daily Scripture portion our Lord is using a parable to demonstrate the importance of faithfulness in little things. In fact notice carefully the wording in the text "a very small matter".

Life is made up of many little things that form the composite of who we are. We really try to practice that in life for we know that little things can have a big impact (either for good or bad).

Today you will be confronted with many "little things." May our Lord truly find each one of us faithful and righteous!

Be encouraged today, ( Hebrews 3:13)

Daily prayer: Father, my little becomes great as You inspire me to do good works in Jesus’ name. Help me not to reach a standstill based upon my limited abilities, wisdom, or resources. I don’t give to others according to my limitations but I give to others from the abundance of blessings that You’ve poured into my life. Grant me creative means and willful determination to extend myself to someone who needs a lift today. Direct my footsteps according to Your Word as You give opportunity for divine encounters this day. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Yesterday Jeff, a podcast listener, wrote concerning Ascension Day: I'm still listening to the podcast and heard the comment about not many Christian churches celebrating Christ's ascension. Our church is having an Ascension Day concert this Sunday night; see https://christcovenant.org/ascension-concert-2023/ for details. I believe it will be live-streamed if you want to watch. One of our Sunday School/ABF teachers, Paul Engle, formerly of Zondervan, recently concluded a study of Christ with a lesson on the Ascension.

Yesterday I stopped by one of our local parks where Amish youth groups had gathered on Ascension Day. The young men are strong and fast. They play a good game of softball while the girls cheer them on. They had two competitive games going on at the same time.
